View Full Version : Leadership.......Where is it?

Something I brought up in another thread and thought deserved to have a thread......

Where the hell is the leadership on the Chiefs? Where are our players that are the team leaders? We don't have any...we don't have Ray Lewis or Tom Brady....it's a major problem.

Kawika Mitchell may think he's a leader but he's not. You have to do your job and be a good player and have the respect of everyone to be a leader and hold people account for their mistakes. Perfect example when he got in the arguement on the sideline with the DB's and they straight up looked at him like "**** you get out of here". They don't respect him....no Ravens player would ever do that to Ray Lewis we all know that.

Someone will probably throw out Larry Johnson but he's not a team leader either....he may run his mouth after games or about things he doesn't like but he's not a team leader in the sense that we need a player to be....of course he doesn't care enough to be a complete player either.

We have nice guys like Trent Green and Tony Gonzalez.....Where they play and don't say much..if you **** up in NE, Tom Bradys gonna be on your ass. We don't have that......

Until the Chiefs find some real leadership in the locker room they are going to continue to be a team that just plays, doesn't feel accountable to the rest of the team and folds when things get tough......like Cleveland. There's a reason things like that happen every single year.

There is leadership but with carl around it for the most part crushed till carl leave we will never have true leadership.

This comes right back to the organization. The whole reason Lewis and Brady have that kind of clout is that everyone on those teams knows if you f**k with them you'll be looking for a new team and it might not wait for the end of the season. Chiefs players all know full well that sucking is acceptable.

I don't think we have as many criminals/leaders on the team as Baltimore, but we could always re-sign Vanover and Bong Morris for next year to provide leadership.

Why would Trent want to come to Jacksonville where there is even less of a receiving crew there than KC? Why would Jacksonville even want a 36 year old QB to come to a new team when they have already have a QB controversy with Garrard & Leftwich?

Just got through watching the 'America's Game' episode on the 1994 49ers. All I can say is, I wish we had a QB with the fire of Steve Young.

The remark that stuck out, and I'm paraphrasings, but he said "it's about the SB. Without the SB, at the end of the day, you pick up your little trinkets, your MVP, your passing records, this milestone, that milestone, and put them in your little bag and go home. But you win that SB, and now your bag is a Hall of Fame bag and that's forever."

BTW, in case I haven't said it, that America's Game is the best thing to happen to TV since Deadwood.

All the players say that Trent is pretty much the undisputed leader on Offense, even so much so that they still called it his team when he was out for weeks. But I guess that isn't good enough for you.

D, well that is an issue we have known for a while. It would be nice if DJ would step up, as he has the play making ability to be looked up to as a possible leader.

When he feels the urge to pick up some blocks or become a competent reciever you let me know....

Trent may be the "leader" but he isn't the type of leader we need, he's a quiet leader. I want a guy who will turn around and rip LJ a new asshole for not picking up a block.

It's a good question. One I've asked myself over and over for several seasons.

Using ray Lewis as an example, could you imagine him leading a defense that let a back up QB, getting his first significant playing time, bring his squad back from 14 down with under 8 minutes?

The simple answer is: We don't have one. On either side of the ball. And we haven't for years.

Okay, that's fine. What kind of a leader is Herm Edwards? What does Herm bring to the organization that makes you feel he's a leader?

Whether you all like the results or not, the D is basically "rebuilt" per Carl Standards, and now the rebuilding of the O will begin in earnest this offseason.

Next Year, this team is Herms. We took a step back this year, not forward. The D is improved ONLY because the Offense gameplanned time of possession to the extreme to keep their sorry assses off the field. So much so, the offense died a miseralble withering death that only vaguely resembles the O that could overcome much of our D's woes.

yeah, I think it is more about accountability....too many players have been allowed to suck for far too long as Chiefs...

You can be a leader, but you can't make CP not resign Hicks, Bartee, etc....

That was the plan, but I'd bet that if you were to look up the numbers, not only did the rest of the offensive numbers dive, but you'd find that the '05 Chiefs averaged about 2 mins TOP more than the '06 Chiefs.

The defense improved, some, but the offense had no part in that.

It doesn't make a lot of sense for people who don't go into the locker room to sit around talking about who the leaders are. Case in point, Brian Waters gave a heated pre-game speech to the whole team last week, not for the first time, and nobody has even mentioned his name yet.

And the idea that being a leader means "yelling at a guy when he screws up" is completed flawed. There are a lot of ways to be a leader. Just because Trent Green, to throw out a name, doesn't fit someone's Ray Lewis defintion of what a leader is, doesn't mean Trent isn't one.

An emotional leader almost always displays that leadership on the field for all to see.

Seriously, though, there are definitive leaders on this team, but they're all on offense.

Trent Green is indisputably the leader of the offense. He is a presense in the huddle, but he doesn't see chewing asses as a productive measure of support. I think there's a case to be made that he's too nice, but that's a criticism you have of his personality, not of whether or not he serves as a leader. Trent is the lead here.

Other very vocal leaders are Tony G and most notably Brian Waters. Both players care about the team first and foremost (unlike LJ), and carry a heavy locker room presense with them.

Sad thing is, one of our best leaders was TRich before we let him get away.

Good points...We don't really have a true leader on this team. But I do think Huard could be a leader? I seen him give it to the players in the Seattle game. This team had some leadership, in Gannon. They let him slip away, and I have a feeling Huard is going to be Rich Gannon part 2.

Trent Green is not a leader.

For those that say he is, then I got a question, why is it every time the Chiefs mess up, he doesn't rally his troops? He doesn't express any emotion and give the guys crap when they mess up?

Trent Green is a nice guy. A complimentary player. Everytime there is a mistake, he shrugs it off like oh well? Everytime his team is down and he has to rally his team, all i see are looks of concern on his face.

*He is an overrated QB. I wouldn't mind if the Chiefs went in a different direction at QB. Or at least leave the competition open in TC.

I think Trent will be good for us for one more year, then I'm ready to move on. I wouldn't be sad if we decided to go in another direction in 07, actually, but we won't. I say let Huard go this offseason, give the backup job to Croyle, and then give the job to him in 08.

Excellent question.

Our team doesn't have a DT, Neil Smith, Hasty, Cherr¥, Ross, or Buchanon on defense. Perhaps Law will take up that role.

On offense we have Green and now the team has legit reasons to doubt him. Is it age? His mellon scrambling? His ability to adjust to a new offensensive emphasis this late in his career?

As dumb as this would have sounded a year ago we really need to lock up Huard, Wilson, and now Reed. We need that solid depth because any of the guys in front of them may be gone next year.

And I seriously doubt Shields comes back...

Actually, this is my opinion...I think the more appropriate thing to do, is, re-sign Huard. Keep all 3 QB's, and next year when training camp hits, you let all 3 compete for the starting QB job.

I don't like this whole idea of Trent being labelled the starter next year. All that does, is make him be complacent. Not a good thing. Even for a nice guy. I want to see some competition. Guys fighting.

*We know what we got out of both Green and Huard. But Croyle is still a ?..Thats why it would make sense imo, to sign Huard. At least you know just to be secure about the QB position.

Hopefully, Brian Waters, Will Shields, Jordan Black, Jason Dunn, Larry Johnson, and every other Chiefs player who has called Trent their leader over the past few months will find the time to answer that question for you.
