Here's the other side from Phil Plait, The Bad Astronomer (http://www.badastronomy.com/bablog/2008/01/23/2007-tu24-miss-distance-update):2007 TU24 miss distance update

According to Don Yeomans at NASA’s JPL, the asteroid 2007 TU24 will miss us by about 530,000 km (334,000 miles) on January 29. It was earlier reported to be a distance of about 700,000 km, so it’ll be a tad closer than earlier thought.

However, before some evil scaremonger runs with this, that doesn’t mean OH NOEZ WE DON’T KNOW WHERE IT WILL BE! It means instead that we do know where it will be, better than we did before. It won’t come anywhere near enough to hit us, and it will have no effect on us at all. It’ll be hard to see; it’s a faint 10th magnitude, meaning you’ll need a big ’scope to see it.

Put it this way: asteroids pass us at this distance all the time, and here we are. No fires, no lightning, no earthquakes… at least, no more than you’d expect to occur randomly. Asteroids this size are only a problem if they hit us, or they might hit us in the future.

So, despite some very misleading tactics by people on the web, we’re not in any danger. I’ll have more on this later (by "this" I mean the scare mongering), too, since this has turned into a whole big thing. But I’m still right, and others still wrong.

Wow. This kind of thing is extremely depressing. What's kind of depressing to me is that we're still at a point where objects can appear out of the blue like this. It won't hit (I'm assuming), but who says the next one that pops up two or three months from earth won't. It's better than it used to be, but near earth asteroid discovery still has a ways to go.

Yup, there's only a small percentage mapped of the near earth orbiting asteroids out there. We could get hit anyday.

Like it matters. If an asteroid is going to hit us, we can't very well put this bitch in reverse and back out of the way. If that is the way things are going to end, than that's the way things are going to end.

Well, because I can tell you are sitting on the edge of your seat in anticipation of what that link will bring you, its Lloyd Bridges quote from Airplane!.."Looks like I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue." Although not the same as it would be if you heard it from the link, atleast you now know what you are missing out on.

Got an idea, we should go find the best damn oil rig guy off the coast and trane him and his crew to fly on a space ship and land on the astroid, drill a big hole in it and drop a bomb in the core of the astroid. The crew will have only a few weeks to trane and if they are successfull with putting the bomb in the astroid they will have to get away very fast.
They will be heros!

Nah, we need to elect Morgan Freeman. Then we dig up an Apollo era-astronaut to head up the mission to head out and deal with this thing.

Either that, or get to be good buddies with Senator Arthur Jellison (AKA The Duke of Silver Valley).

We only have 5 days this time. We should take all of the robots in the world to the Galapagos Islands, fill them full of booze and smokes, then have them direct their exaust vents into the air at full thrust. That should move the Earth out of the path of the astroid and far enough away from the sun to reverse global warming without worrying about cleaning up the atmosphere.

What a idiot, according to Wikipedia (who used other sources)

On November 9, 2007 the coma, the thin dissipating dust ball around the comet, was found to be the largest object in the solar system, with a diameter greater than that of the Sun.[1] (Though by Solar System standards, the mass of the comet is minuscule.)

IDIOT The mass was not larger, just the diameter....

In related news, Carl Peterson announced a new 5 day plan.

Also in the NFL, the '72 Dolphins celebrated yet another year of being the only team who has actually finished a season undefeated. The Patriots record will forever have an * next to it, as not being able to finish the season because of the EOW.

Thanks for clearing that up. I was highly skeptical of that claim.

Frankly, I'm shocked that the coma was that large, though my knowledge of comets could fit into a newly formed black hole.

I, for one, am not ready. I have stuff on my desk at work that I can't get to until at least next week, probably Tuesday at best. My wife has three pictures she wants hung, no way that gets done before Sunday and Sunday is Super Bowl so it might not get done then. I really need to get my car in for an oil change and tire rotation......No, I am definitely NOT ready for the end of the world. Get back to me maybe a week from Friday and I'll see how things are looking then.
