That is top on my list next time I go out for shots. I need one badly. I went on the Brewery tour a few weeks ago and am kicking myself for not bringing the cam. Really cool experience.

I am using a Canon 5D.

Canon just came out with the Rebel XSi. It is supposed to be their big gun for people just like yourself looking for a starter DSLR. You can get the body for about 800. Remember though, when you start getting into the DSLR game the body is important of course but the lenses are where a lot of your investment belongs.

Ya, exactly. After lots of research, the constant theme is the lens is where you spend lots of money.

Right now, narrowed it down between a Canon and Nikon. Was looking at that very similar Canon model and a Nikon D80. Wanted a camera that has a bigger body since I have big hands. Decision, decisions.

Thanks.

It is a tough one...I am a Canon guy but you are on the right track going with a camera centric company via Canon or Nikon.

It is a blast and what I love to do...lots of great resources out there.

Any tips on the best resources on effective photo taking. No one has ever contacted me about the Canon 40D that fell into my lap, and I'm starting to think no one ever will.

Awesome thing to fall into your lap.

Digital Photography School is probably the best one stop place to take in a lot of info.

http://digital-photography-school.com/blog/

I humbly submit an article I did on composition that got a lot of traction around the interwebs.

http://www.zachishere.com/2008/04/09/why-dont-my-photos-look-cool/

I would also recommend picking up Picassa. It is free software that is great for organizing photos but also an easy way to do post work on them making them look good without having to get expensive software or be a total geek. A lot of the magic is in processing...changing exposure and this and that.

http://picasa.google.com/

Best of luck. Be sure to drop me a line if you have more specific questions\problems.

|Zach|

I don't think the sun is anywhere around there...even though the shaping of the light makes it seem so. I just brought the colors out a little though. Took this one last year from Liberty Memorial looking out over KC.

That was my point. The sun can't be there.

Actually - yes. I think we frequently see things from similar vantage points despite the slight cultural differences.

Fair enough. For me, looking at that picture, if one wasn't familiar with KC, it would seem that the sun was setting directly behind Union Station. Since that picture is taken from the (relative) south looking north, that isn't possible without manipulation.

Hence, my question.

Good god. A bright sunset on clouds that emphasizes light other than the sun? Who'da thunk? It's readily apparent the sun is setting in the west with reflections.

Note that the light levels decrease as you move west in the picture. I suppose that depends on what light Zach manipulated.

For me there's clearly more light shining on the west facing elevations while the southern facing elevations are shadowed.

The sun is coming from the west hitting the sides of those buildings and even street signs in the lower part of the photo. The light in the center behind the buildings I am sure just looks more dramatic because it is a relatively blank space that looks even lighter right against the darker clouds...just some highlights that might have been blown out a little bit. I don't see how it could be mistaken the sun though.

Not at all. It's clearly a shot at sunset, so of course the west sides of the buildings are illuminated. I'm not disputing that.

I am pointing out that I suspect the light levels above the "skyscrapers" have been increased to the point of making it seem that the sun is setting "behind" them/to the north for dramatic effect.

My experience, through years growing up and six years as a photog for the newspaper I was at, Canon's the way to go. Mainly for the lenses.

Nikon is a fine camera, but I personally think Canon's got the better glass. And what is photography? Nothing more than bending light. The glass matters.
