I can admit that that sentence does not clearly reflect what I meant. And I believe this statement from you is more a reflection on your stupidity than mine.

For further clarification, I don't believe that the amendment in the constitution granting free speech is meant to be an amendment that we hide behind as a shield for saying nasty things to each other for no good reason. And I believe, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams probably didn't encounter the nastiness that is speech in our world today. Moreover, that amendment was meant in conjunction with things we say about government. But hey, I only went to grad school. I probably don't know anything anyway.

Jefferson's camp accused President Adams of having a "hideous hermaphroditical character, which has neither the force and firmness of a man, nor the gentleness and sensibility of a woman."

In return, Adams' men called Vice President Jefferson "a mean-spirited, low-lived fellow, the son of a half-breed Indian squaw, sired by a Virginia mulatto father."

The slave owner part is true for several, but the women thing is not. Washington, Hamilton, Madison and especially Adams were very close to their wives. Jefferson was also devoted to his wife, but she died young (and her death devastated him). Franklin was the only one of the founders who really dissed his wife, and that was primarily by his extended, unrepentant absence.

These were extraordinary people, and tended to have extraordinary wives.

I watched a documentary that stated that these men of power routinely banged their female slaves. Also, they may have had extraordinary wives, but I doubt they gave two shits about female equality.

Good point. We need to ban the word "Redskins". That will make talking about certain games a bit more difficult, but it's all about making sure that not a single human being, no matter how overly sensitive he, she, or he/she might be, feels even the slightest bit of potential discomfort because of any phrase word or, really, even letter.

There was a show on History Channel last night that made allegations against Washington that I'd never heard before - among them that he nailed Nathanael Greene's wife and fathered a son with one of his slaves. I'd never heard that before. Admittedly, I'm not too well read on Madison and Monroe personally, so I don't know if they did or didn't bang the help. Jefferson certainly did.

As for the equality thing for everybody, you're probably right, but then these people would have generally looked down their noses at all commoners, male and female alike. Back then you had to be a property owner to be a player.

Allow me to explain my reasoning, Mr. BigVE ...

First of all, I believe that all English-speaking persons who post on this board should have full access to the entire palette of English language words available to them. This is the ideal solution.

Second of all, it isn't the particular word that's important, it's the "meaning" and energy the word carries with it. That's why, if you're a word-painter and you're going to paint a picture with words, you need all the words (or contextual meanings) at your disposal.

Third of all, some words were concocted for the express and sole purpose of demeaning another group. Therefore, the meaning these words carry is singular and pointed. They have one purpose and one purpose alone. And that purpose is to cause harm. The word, "****er" is one of those.

All the other words on the list (with the exception of "Kike") have other meanings. Gook can just mean goo, for example. Chink is a hole in a wall. The other words that are intended to describe a white person - "honky" and "whitey" - are ridiculous insults. So is "kike". If you can't insult somebody any better than that, you are in no position to insult anybody.

Therefore, the word, "****er" is the only one that is a problem in and of itself and, even though I'd prefer that the board not be censored in any way, it's the one word generally accepted as worthy.

Words don't hurt people, its the intended purpose of the words. I love comedy, which includes language issues all the time. Since I'm a white guy, its never bothered me to be called "honkey or peckerwood" or whatever. Many years ago, I had a summer job as the only white janitor in a big city hospital. All the guys I worked with as janitors were black. They called me "Casper" and would kid around with me all the time. But I never was denied a job, or a loan, or access to a club or a restaurant or whatever, because of my color. So I can understand why there would be sensitivity towards that by people who have experienced that. There are racists and religious bigots that come from all walks of life, and people who are not bigoted from all walks of life. The question is, what is in your heart? Martin Luther King got it right when he said to judge a person not by the color of his skin, but by the content of his character.
