From the schedule, looks like all three games in Detroit this week are Noon starts. How weird is that? Says that on the Royals website anyway. Is that right?

Hey, did you know the Cardinals have a really loyal fanbase. Honestly, St. Louis has a longer and more dedicated baseball following than KC. St. Louis is more like Boston or New York in terms of baseball history just ask any Cardinal fan. Sorry didn't feel like a Royals thread without a little turd bird douchebaggery.

I think I'd seriously rather see this than any of the scrubs we have back there (outside of Soria).

You know your bullpen sucks ass when Kyle Freakin Farnsworth has the second best ERA of the bunch.

Where's Tony Pena Jr when you need him?

Luckily, the Royals won their special petition from the league office to play today. It is, after all, the home opener for the Cards, so all other activities must first get approval.

A 4 out save with a 5 run lead?

Once the bases become loaded a 5 run lead becomes a save situation if a new pitcher comes because the tying run is in the on-deck circle.

Yeah Jose is projecting 81 HR's, 61 doubles, and 162 RBI's. Oh and I'm sure it'll hold up to given his history.

Fine with me if he wants to make a contract year statement, but if in July we hear about Dayton Moore signing him to an extension rather than announcing a trade, I'll be calling for a 21st century version of a lynch mob to be knocking down Dayton's door.

We where hoping they might just cut him, but if he's extremely productive we might get some good prospects from a guy in the final year of his deal. Of course given the Royals luck these prospects will fall off the face of the earth as soon as we acquire them. Tyler Lumsden comes to mind........

To be fair, Hillman's the same guy who is criticized for leaving guys in too long. Like when he left Meche in for 130 pitches and blew him up.

He's certainly made errors but DM has put him in a tough position. Most games you either have to go to the pen or leave the starter in for 120 pitches.

Fair enough. Just askin'. Haven't got into the spirit of watching baseball yet.

Thanks, bullpen. We could have been 6-2, but you made sure we weren't.

It's good to be the Royals. Everyone expects you to suck, and we never disappoint.

Time to see if Soria can throw 150 innings...

It's really coming down to that...

130 pitch count for the starters...whatever they can't finish Soria finishes.

Rinse, wash, repeat, arms fall off.

I can believe we lost this game.......but then again I can't.

If I was Hillman I'd go all Bobby Knight on my bullpen.

5-0 into the 7th inning and we fucking lose in the 8th.

by the way, who would have guessed this was a contract year for Jose Guillen?????!

lets try and focus on the positives, though...

Guillen, in a contract year...with Butler in the 3 hole and DeJesus and Scotty Pods at 1 and 2 is actually A DECENT 1-4...we haven't had that in YEARS.

So why don't we just start w/ the bull pen for three innings. If we are still in it, put in a starter. No need to waste them if we are going to just lose anyway.

sounds like something LaRussa used to do with the A's back in the day...

Or...

Why don't we start demoting these guys and find something in our farm that works?

And if nothing works...at least we went down swinging.

Shit...these guys can't even throw strikes...let alone get outs.

Lets switch it up..

How bout we try letting the bullpen pitch the first 3 innings..

Then bring in the starters to finish off the last 6...

I support this statement. I would rather eat the salary of some of these guys and get the younger guys up here and give them a shot. These effin retreads we run out that suck ass. Parrish has been Ok and Farnsworth and Cruz have not terrible so far but the rest of them can pack their bags. Cruz is striking guys out again but a 2.14 whip is terrible for a reliever.

They won't bring up any quality guys early (like Crow) because they don't want to start burning their MLB service time. It lets them go free agent sooner. Like it was said earlier in another Royals thread, the team is about revenue, not about championships. They're making money as losers, so why try harder?

I know it sounds weird that they would care about a players service time, when they know they can't afford them long term anyway. I guess the goal is to manage the service time best they can, to lengthen it out as long as possible, for as cheap as possible, before a player can control their own destiny and leave (ala Damon, Dye, Beltran).

The Royals problems have been a perfect storm of failure. After Mr. K died, they were rudderless, run by committee until somebody could take ownership of the franchise. Things fell apart during that process.

Then Mr. Wal Mart buys them, a guy who knew nothing about the baseball business, and kept guys like Herk Robinson and Allard Baird in charge on a shoestring budget. Scouting got worse, minor league pipeline got worse, money spent on free agents poorly.

Then in comes Dayton Moore from Atlanta (seen as John Schurholtz disciple), and he hired Trey Hillman out of Japan/Yankees background.

Same old crap in a brand new box.

Whoever will be next (manager or GM) won't fare any better.

Our ownership is too complacent. Baseball doesn't care whether all teams can compete. It just isn't a priority. As long as the Yankees and Red Sox play each other 30 times a year, MLB is happy.

KC?

Oh, maybe we'll give them an All Star game once every 50 years.

Well said once again...

I think the overall thinking around the league is: "just be thankful for a fat wallet like Glass to be able to still have a MLB team in KC"

I forget....was Glass who Kauffman wanted to buy the team.....or was he selected because he had the deepest pockets of the competing ownership groups??

Glass was a friend of the Kauffman family and does have deep pockets. The value of the Royals has increased from less than 100 mill to more than 300 mill since he bought the team, so don't feel too bad for him.

Info on David Glass (pertaining to Royals ownership) lifted from Wiki:

David D. Glass (b. September 1935) is the former President and Chief Executive Officer of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., and is currently the Owner and Chief Executive Officer of the Kansas City Royals on April 18, 2000 after serving as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Royals since September 23, 1993. The Board, composed of Glass and other individuals appointed by Glass, approved his bid of $96 million for the Royals despite the fact a competing bid by Miles Prentice was 25% higher, at $120 million. During Glass' ownership (2000-present) the Royals have averaged more than 90 losses, with only one winning season and four seasons with 100 or more losses, the worst sustained performance in the franchise's 41 year history.

Career with Kansas City Royals

During the Major League Baseball strike of 1994-1995, Glass, who was not yet owner of the Royals but chairman of the board administering the team after Ewing Kauffman's death, was one of the most forceful voices on the ownership side to oppose any settlement with the players' union, and supported the use of strike breaking "replacement" players, despite a court ruling that Major League owners were in violation of Federal labor laws.

Glass created a controversy on 9 June 2006 by revoking the press credentials of two reporters who had earlier asked pointed questions to Royals management. The harsh move to avoid criticism infuriated many within the press and led to a backlash of articles that extended far beyond the Kansas City sports community.

Born David Dayne Glass on a farm in Oregon County, Missouri, the son of Marvin Glass and Myrtle Van Winkle, he grew up in Mountain View, Missouri and graduated from Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri. Glass and his wife, Ruth, are the parents of three children, Dan, Don and Dayna, all of whom serve on the Royals' Board of Directors. MSU's Glass Hall, which houses business and management classes, was named after him.
