I know you are just expalining the rule, but it is just a moronic rule. If a RB breaks the plane and fumbles, it is ruled a TD. Yet a WR can't get both feet down land on his ass with control and STILL get it overturned? It's a bad rule.
You don't have the question of whether the RB ever possessed the ball prior to the fumble over the plane.
If a player truly possesses the ball AND is aware of the standard, we don't have the situation you saw.

The NFL has gone from 'the ground can't cause a fumble,' to 'you better not let the ground cause you to fumble.'
I can see the rationale, but in this case it was clearly not a case of the receiver being UNABLE to hold onto the ball. Rather he thought he'd caught a game winner, and emotion took over.
In short it was a matter of the receiver not being coached on what's expected of him.
Have not seen the play.. But if you get both feet down, knee and go untouched when you hit the ground and it comes out it is incomplete.. If he gets hit though it should be down as soon as his knee hits and td..

Have not seen the play.. But if you get both feet down, knee and go untouched when you hit the ground and it comes out it is incomplete.. If he gets hit though it should be down as soon as his knee hits and td..
Was he hit?
No, he leapt over the D, pulled the ball down, twisted as he came to earth, got both feet down, then as his twist continued he had the ball in one hand, he went to his knees and brought his ball carrying hand to ground. As the ball made contact with the ground, hand above, it's unclear whether he let go of it to begin celebrating, or lost it to ground contact. But he left the ball on the tarmac in either case.

I see what you're trying to do there.
He holds on to the ball for far too long and has poor awareness. He never seems to know where the rush is coming from and where to move in the pocket. He's got a bad line, but elite QBs like Manning, Brady, and Brees wouldn't be taking these kinds of sacks.
You've surely watched Matt Cassel enough to know that poor pass protection doesn't excuse poor pocket presence.

You're right, screw that. Expand it to 32 games! More football!
"This SUNDAY: Tyler Palko vs. Brady Quinn, AFC West title on the line! Tickets are available!"
They need to start weight and speed control on the players to reduce injuries. Starve weight off and put leg weights on 'em.
Philly has more penalty yards than yards of offense in the first half... ROFL
