Chiefs vs Broncos: What's at stake?

Considering this is one of the worst Denver teams in years, not much is at stake for them. However, beating KC would be a nice way to start the second half the season. Since winning their first six games in 2009, the Broncos are 4-14. Of course, that’s 18 games, but the last time Denver only won as few as four games in a complete season was 1971. KC is hoping to pile onto their misery by handing the Broncos their fifth loss in a row.

Vegas: KC by 1

The main incentive for KC has nothing (or very little) to do with Denver and everything to do with Oakland and San Diego. The Chiefs loss to the Raiders last Sunday reduced the division lead to only a half game over Oakland and one and a half over San Diego. Both are taking on ByeCity Sunday. Should KC lose, they would be tied with Oakland, but it would only be a mirage. The Chiefs would be 1-2 in the division, while the Raiders would be 3-0 and have at least half the head-to-head tiebreaker in the bank.

Needless to say, this game is critical. If KC can’t beat the worst team in the division, they can’t be expected to be successful in the second half the season, no matter how weak the schedule.

The interesting thing about this match-up is that the previous time the two teams played was the final game of the season in 2009. Both teams racked up a lot of offensive yardage in that game. Jamaal Charles set a Chiefs record - rushing for 259 yards, and Kyle Orton passed for 431 yards – at the time the seventh highest total in Bronco’s history.

KC’s defense has improved greatly from that game. The most yards allowed passing so far in 2010 is 289 (Houston). Denver, on the other hand has given up 34.5 ppg in their last four games, which includes 208.3 yards per game in rushing! Since KC still leads the NFL in rushing per game, that would seem like an obvious benefit to exploit, but then I would have said the same thing against Oakland.

If you take a look at the total yardage margin, you will see that KC is +17.3 per game while Denver is +4.5 per game. This is the best indicator of how good a team really is. Since 16 yards represents a point (on average), the difference between KC and Denver is about a point – and that is what Vegas says KC should win by.

Clearly, Denver has a huge advantage passing while KC has a huge advantage rushing. But, probably what separates KC (5-3) from Denver (2-6) more than anything is the turnover and sack margin. The Chiefs are +6, +7 while the Broncos are -4, -12. It’s very fair to say that if Denver breaks even on turnovers and sacks, they have as good a chance to win this game as KC.

Since the Chiefs have played conservatively enough to avoid turnovers and sacks, odds are pretty good that they will come out on top of both. The fly in the ointment is that five of the six turnovers for KC this season have been on the road.

This really is a big game. 1-2 in the division and 4 conference losses already would not be good.

If we lose today, the Raiders take 1st place in the AFCW. THAT is what's at stake.

It's just not happening. As the article says, if we can't beat the worst team in our division, it's over. Done. Over. It's simple. It was a cute first half of the season, but the playoffs are earned in the second half.

Our problem is we play equal to the level of the opponent.

We don't get blowed out and we really don't get blowed out.

We are the perfect example of average right now...

Yep.

Of course some fans will make excuses after the game and be like, "well it's hard to win on the road, any team could lose, bullshit, bullshit." Good teams win these games. Good teams win the Raider game. Good teams win the Texans game. It's obvious. If we are a good team, do it now.

Yup, that is what I said before the Raiders game. If we lose today we are slightly below average, if we win we are just a step ahead of average, but a loss will probably guarantee that we will not win the AFC West.
