I'm a non-smoker, and I don't drink at the movies, but there's nothing like people taking away people's (namely business owners') rights one proposition at a time.

Maybe this should be in DC. If so, move it. Just thought I'd get people's opinions.

I won't comment on the smoking part, as I'm sure that's about to blow up into a nice spirited debate.

The alcohol thing is odd to me, though. I mean, I think that MOST theaters shouldn't have alcohol, but there's an "adult" (not porn) theater near me that has a full bar and doesn't allow kids in. It's a lot of fun.

Agree 100%.

I can see the family theaters not serving alcohol (all our theaters are considered family, I believe), but, even then, I can't think of once instance that I've heard of where there have been any problems caused by it since they started serving alcohol (beer).

It's a great way to watch a movie. I suppose it could make it confusing when a woman tells her friend that she's going to the adult theater to watch a movie and suck down a few.

I agree that it should be the business' decision, but I do enjoy the smoking ban, and it's actually pretty weird now when I go into a restaurant that has a smoking section (such Smokehouse in Gladstone). It's almost like I have to be reminded that people still smoke, which is kind of nice... heh.

I've read stories where bars have put signs outside that ask "where are all the non-smokers now?" because of the decline in business after a smoking ban, which I find odd, but it would truly suck for a business owner (which is, again, why I think it should be up to them).

I see a point in smoking bans. However I don't exactly see a point in the alcohol thing. In Columbia there's the Rag Tag Theatre which only shows independent films. Which in some ways is cool...and really most ways kind of sucks unless something interesting comes through.

But they have a full bar, good food and a great atmosphere. It's nice to be able to get a bottle of mead and watch a flick. It would be a shame if something like that was voted in Columbia.

I guess in Springfield it makes sense though. Bible belt. It'll get cha!

How is the alcohol thing a more legitimate proposal?

I think "legitimate" is probably the wrong word. I voted against both proposals. The smoking ban was just the most :BS: of the two proposals. Most of the businesses here in Springfield were already smoke free anyway. This pretty much just targets bars, smoke shops, and private clubs. VFW and American Legion posts can't even smoke in their own clubs. It also was a very vague law in that it defines not smoking in playgrounds or childcare facilities. It defines childcare as anywhere that cares for children, and playgrounds as anywhere that children play.

Movie theater ban is just for the big theaters were kids make up alot of the sales. It was the big theater on Campbell that was the target of this. The little indepedent movie craphouses like the Moxie can still serve beer.

Hell Columbia is way more liberal than Springfield and it had a no smoking ban passed way before Springfield did. And St. Louis County as well.

Neither have I. Not sure I would want to buy a beer at the movies, though. Knowing what they charge for something like Milk Duds, I imagine I would have to give them a kidney for a beer.

I've bought one. It was a Bud Light, and I think it was around $6.

I've been singing this song all afternoon while wondering how I got it stuck in my head. Then, I remembered.....

goody two, goody two
goody goody two shoes

I for one am glad about the smoking ban and I happen to know a lot of people (though probably not most) in the industry that are happy about it as well. They won't publicly stand up and say that they are for fear of pissing off their regulars, many of whom happen to be smokers. But a lot of the industry people aren't pissed about it. It basically took the option off the table and they end up with a cleaner atmosphere over all.

So for people like myself who hate to go home smelling like an ash tray and with a pounding head ache, its a big win.

It's true, smokers are bad tippers.

I use to smoke and think public places should be smoke free.

Everytime I smell a cig, I want one.

So all you smokers need to suck it up and work with me.

Still smoke free!

I used to get hangovers from smoke when I bartended years ago.

And no, I didn't drink on the job.

Anyone that says second hand smoke doesn't physically harm others is fucking retarded.

BUT, if a business owner wants smoking, they should be allowed to have it.

Never thought it would pass down here. Guess what city I won't be going to bars in? Ozark, MO Chiefsplanet members, let's get together. Maybe we can break the Springfield curse.

I must just not be that sensitive to it. I mean, I can smell it on classmates when they come in from a smoke break, but, the only time I've felt I smelled like an ash tray was whenever I went to play bingo. Clubs, I guess, but that was back in the day, and you know people are there to drink, smoke, dance, and pick people up.

This. How can you go into someones business and tell them what they can and cannot do. Crazy

Easy, same way you can tell them whathours they can operate, how old employees need to be, how much to charge in certain instances, etc.

I see it this way...you can't smoke at the mall. You can't smoke at the movies. You can't smoke on a plane. Why is a restaurant any different?

This has been a law in Iowa for some time now. Being a non-smoker, I was happy to see it happen. But honestly, most of my friends smoke, and even they think it's not a bad deal now. They enjoy the smoke free atmosphere and not smelling like an ashtray at the end of the night. The biggest inconvenience is having to go outside to smoke in extreme weather.
