The thing I notice with Geno is how he gets very wide in the pocket.

Throwing like that and it takes away from getting the most out of his ability. Throws with only arm motion and do those passes ever show good zip? He has arm strength but is he using it? Kaepernick can do it but that is because he cocks his arm way back and then throws.
Does he practice like this? You need a consistent motion as a QB and he has to step and throw when doing drills. Not keeping that consistent in games makes it harder to be accurate.

And the wide stance shrinks him in the pocket and it's harder to see the field.

And when he rolled to the left a couple times he hop flicked a pass across his body like he is starting a double play. Those were super risky.

I don't think there is anything wrong with his mechanics... when he completes passes, they have zip and are pretty accurate. His decision making is what is just awful. He trusts his shitty WR to make plays they can't. It's also like he is color blind and can't see the other teams colored jerseys because he will throw the ball right to the opposing team like WTF.

If you are the Jets, you need to make a decision:

1) We've invested in Geno Smith, we need to make a change in the Offensive scheme to better suit him.

2) We will keep giving Geno chances to understand and improve in the WCO.

3) Consider him a bust and move on with a new QB.

They're not invested in him. He was a 2nd round pick and doesn't have a huge contract.

They'll bring in competition next offseason and he'll probably be benched when the turnovers begin to flow.

You are right. Luckily they aren't too invested... just a wasted second round pick. The Chiefs are fucking awesome at blowing second round picks for mediocre QB's. Har har.

You're right... here you go.

I don't think this game proved that Geno Smith is a bust. It's one game in a young career. He made a couple of bad throws that were really costly. When he is a 10 year vet, if he will be a 10 year vet, he'll still have games like this every now and again. Quarterbacks aren't infallible. If your requirement is perfection, you'll be let down everytime.

Clay, hang your poster back up on the wall. The kid is going to be fine.

Not making excuses for Geno, he did lose it... but so did the Refs.

If the refs don't call that phantom PI on the bomb, the Bears punt instead of going up 14-0.
Then they knocked a Defensive TD off the board with a premature whistle.

If Geno hadn't been playing from so far behind due to these situations, maybe he doesn't try and force stupid throws and ends up with a nice game...

I know as a clutch QB you have to overcome that kind of bullshit, and apparently Geno can not... but the refs were really a bunch of dicks last night.

and the final play of Geno's drive was PI in the end zone as well that wasn't called. Still a bad pass that had Kerley leaping out of bounds.

The WCO does require a very smart, and self-less QB. If he isn't that (and I haven't watched him much), then the jets either need to change their system, or Geno needs to find a team that runs the system he can excel in.

I dont understand how you can say you are done. You need to give the kid time to develop. He is 3 games into his 2nd season. If after 3 seasons he is still making the same mistakes, sure move on. But after 19 games (some of which he didnt even play the whole game)? Way too early.

Really is a good post. I agree with all of it. If forced to judge Geno's future, I'd guess it to be underwhelming... but it could still very much go the other way. Said the same thing about him as a prospect. The physical talent is there.. just not sure about his mind. Too soon to have given up on him, if a fan.

Meh.

This has been hashed and rehashed to infinity here. What people define as a fan is different for each individual, but overall, it means having some sort of attachment to a specific team. If one fan thinks that something needs to be done differently through the organization, then so be it. They don't have to be a complete homer and act like there's nothing wrong, nor do they have to hope for the best if they feel like it won't work out long-term.

Just my 2 cents.

Now that Clay has finally been broken (oh sweet goodness :fire:) I'll say this about Geno outside of the usual "live arm" stuff... he seems to me to usually look to pass first, not always taking off like a scared cat at the first sign of pressure.

Thats the best thing to point to to say that he might eventually make it.

Most of his runs last night were designed IIRC, the rest of the time he looked to throw it... if he's adamant about playing that way, it will serve him well.

I am not advocating we draft a qb just to draft a qb. I advocate we draft a qb and try to develop him into the next Roethlisberger, Rivers etc..

Blast from the past:

This time the anonymous sources talked to ESPN.com, which quotes two people who work for NFL teams and who think Smith has character issues that will make life rough for him in his new NFL home.

“He’s going to have a tough time in New York,” an NFC scout said. “Right now, he’s coming off as a spoiled, pampered brat.”

Smith’s decision to fire his agents also has caused him to take some criticism from those who see it as a sign that he doesn’t stick it out when the going gets tough.

“One of his perceived weaknesses is working through adversity,” an AFC personnel executive said.

Geno said "F×ck you" twice to the heckling fan as he walked off the field. CBS 2 has the video. See it first on WLNY at 9:45

"This guy has won four playoffs games in two years, all on the road," Ryan said today. "When you talk about elite quarterbacks, I think he’s an elite quarterback because he wins the big games, and he's a winner."

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2011/08/rex_ryan_says_mark_sanchez_is.html

"This is our QB. He's going to be our QB as long as I'm here, which I hope is a long, long time," said Ryan.

No one is saying you have to draft a sure thing. But if a GM drafted a player just to say he tried, I'd want him fired ASAP.

We have a better chance at drafting high risks and succeeding than we do drafting players to save money on the cap and succeeding.

Why does Rex Ryan still have a job?

The Giants failures took enough heat away from his failures.
And the defense was still OK despite the offense, not so much this year.

They run the same playbook, but Rex is the one who knows how to actually use it.

We don't need superior talent on the field to recognize that we'd be a better defense if Rex replaced Sutton.

If available, this franchise would be nuts not to court him.

Geno Smith completed 17-of-33 passes for 209 yards, a touchdown and an interception against the Lions Week 4.
The Jets marched down the field on their first possession of the game, scoring a field goal on a 71-yard, 6:24 drive. The offense fell apart of that, though, with Geno only completing 4-of-11 passes for 32 yards in the first half. Geno struggled from the pressure of the crowd more than the pressure of the Lions' pass rush. The chants of "We Want Vick" that rang out in MetLife Stadium during the third quarter seemed to affect him, and he reportedly cursed at fans as he left the field. After four games, Smith is on pace for 3,688 yards, 16 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. Sep 28 - 4:51 PM

The amount of stupid in this thread is staggering by the usual suspects.
