I know, I know, he's the "kicker that shall not be named" but I found this interview fascinating. He takes a fair share of the responsibility but also calls out DT and the offense for not making more plays.

Perfect weather for running, freezing cold, wind blowing everywhere.

Marty decides for once in his life to try to pass all over the yard.

And don't forget, nevertheless, Lake Dawson had both hands on the ball in the endzone on the play before the final miss.

Maybe we'll finally find the QB who throws passes that WRs are incapable of dropping.

Yeah blame the WR who barely had a sack lunch in the NFL and for not making a highlight-reel catch in a playoff game...that would have gone down as "The Catch II"...if it had actually happened.

Blame him for that one "drop" when Bono was chucking up ducks all night.

Give me a fucking break. That's like blaming Louie Aguiar for not getting the first down on that fake FG in '97 when in actuality Grbac had a giant chicken-bone stuck in his throat at the end...and there were four or five drops in that playoff game, too.

Drops my ass...drop your game manager off a cliff, please.

Anyone want to tell the Welcher that Gannon threw that pass?

Or that the commentators paused the telestrator like 5 times in that 45 seconds to remark on how good a throw it was.

'Hamas' Jenkins

It doesn't matter if he was kicking into a wind three times stronger than the storms of Jupiter, he should have been on the field. He should have been cut the moment he missed an XP for the second straight week against Miami, where his kicking performance single-handedly cost the Chiefs that game (Missed FG led to a 4th down and goal attempt down thirteen when an earlier FG would have allowed a chip shot FG to bring it within a TD, followed by another missed XP).

I remember the game pretty well; at a party within ear shot of the stadium. First half had Marcus Allen running pretty well and the second half consisted of passes down the frozen sideline. When it came down to the end of the game, we knew he would redeem himself and make the kick. After the miss, none of us has felt the same about the Chiefs.

Broncos, Colts, Patriots, Steelers... It didn't matter how good the Chiefs were in the regular season, they would always find a way to fall apart in the playoffs.

Nice that the Chiefs have finally decided to do it the easy way... Get the QB and build the team around him.

Why do you'll blame the kicker that shall go unnamed when you had Nick Lowery and ran him out of town? Blame Carl, Marty, or whoever made that move, not the guy that replaced him.

It doesn't take a genius to understand if you're gonna play Martyball you're not gonna score many TDs and FGs are gonna be at a premium.

I grew up in TX and wasn't a chiefs fan until later on. In 1988-89 my local paper had fantasy football for the first time ever. Nick Lowery was my kicker. He was straight up MONEY. He won me several weeks.

You are right he should never have been on the field. But the issue is playing scared and having the kicker be such an important role. I want to not care about having a good fg kicker because my team will take care of business instead of playing scared which is the common thread for chief's fans misery.

They didn't play 'scared.' They played stupid for the conditions.

Marty chose that day to be Reid before Reid. -20 degrees, swirling winds, . . . they'll never expect our noodle-armed QB to pass all over the yard, since he hasn't had to all season, and he's pure coastal wussy-boy. So what if Marcus is at peak Marcus? Let Bono's freak flag FLY!!!

A study in contrasts. In 2009 the Chargers went 13-3, had the #1 seed, and lost by 3 at home to the Jets in the divisional round when Nate Kaeding missed 3 field goals in perfect weather. But I can't ever recall hearing a single chargers fan blame Kaeding for that loss. And that was after he'd already cost them a football game in the playoffs a few years earlier missing a last second chip shot vs the same Jets.

Fans blame the offense for not getting into the end zone, blame Cromartie for shying away from a tackle on the final drive, and blame the team in general, but Kaeding doesn't get near the hate as the one who shall not be named, despite having no bad weather excuses and it being his 2nd big playoff failure.

I was at this game. Miserably cold. I was 3 rows behind the Colts bench. Quinten Coryatt was giving jawing with the fans the entire game. Yeah, I guess if Buffalo could forgive Norwood, we could do the same for Lin right? I think I was 6 years old at that time and I cried myself to sleep that night. My first real experience of Chiefs fandom. But I have watched the replay of that game a bunch of times. Looking back at the obviously flawed offense, does everyone really think we would not have choked the following week against Pitt or that we could actually beat Dallas in the SB? Nobody was beating Dallas that year. They made a statement when they doubled us up on Thanksgiving Day earlier that season.

The '95 team was a paper tiger. They didn't have the skill position players on offense to go the distance.

I used to hate Lin Elliot, but I've softened, because the Colts kicker missed twice that day, too. Kicking conditions were awful. And that team wasn't going anywhere anyway.

Biggest chokers in Chiefs playoff history:

1. Alex Smith, for blowing TWO home games he had obvious chances to win and being total garbage against the Pats in 2015.

2. Elvis Grbac.

T-3. Assorted individuals: Kendrick Lewis, Dwayne Bowe, Greg Robinson

Elvis Grbac was an anthill compared to Marty. We should have never benched Gannon and the 2 minute offense at the end of the Broncos 97 loss was horrific. No time management at all.

That’s on Marty

Marty didn't check that shit down in bounds.

Twice.

Yeah it’s all the QB. You’re about to find out real quick that that thinking is a fallacy.

Or I don't know Steve Bono could have not thrown 3 ints and they could have scored a td but I know that's too much to ask against the 9-7 Colts.

Irrelevant.

In a 10-7 game... the kicker who missed 3 kicks saying that the offense or DT could have done more is tantamount to him saying... "they should have scored so I wouldn't have been put in that position".

Despite those 3 interceptions, the defense held a pro football team to 10 points. Despite those 3 interceptions, Bono and co did enough to put the ball well within FG range for 3 attempts.

Don't misunderstand... I agree that the offense SHOULD have done more but that just wasn't the case and that is just how some football games go. It was up to Elliott to win us the game and HE choked. He is the last person who should be shifting blame.

Perhaps just a me thing but I wish, if he was gonna do an interview on the subject, that he would have just come out and owned it, apologized to the fans (for whatever that is worth), and left it at that. No calling out the offense or throwing dead Chiefs icons under the bus in any way.

Could see in his eyes when he came on the field that day, he knew he would choke.Maybe he missed those kicks on purpose.

I agree with others that it's time to forgive Mr. Elliott. For some reason, time is healing that wound for me.

And it also puts things in context when we realize that the Chiefs are cursed. If Elliott had made all three kicks, the Colts would have returned all three ensuing kickoffs for touchdowns. That's how it works.

I agree with this completely forgive but never forget. Move on and focus on Mahomes breaking the curse. It's cool to hear from Lin and I'd have a beer with him at a game!
