My question is how the fuck the red raiders had a talent like Pat yet the red raider defense made greg rob efense look like the 84 bears?

That would be the fault of Kingsbury, who struggled on the recruiting trail and made some terrible decisions with the defensive coordinator hires.

Easy answer.....Mahomes didn't know how to use the force until Andywon Kenobi started coaching him.

For some unknown reason, the Big 12 as a whole can't play defense. This isn't just a Big 12 problem, but it seems like none of the teams in the Big 12 can play defense competently. Basically every team in the B12 played defense as if Bob Sutton was coaching them for the last decade or so.

According to a former Chief who was on or around the coaching staff when Patrick was drafted. The talent was very much evident. But alot of teaching/coaching & his willingness to learn is what made him what he is today.

I know no one wants to give him credit but Alex Smith has a huge role in Pats development

How good were the 84 Bears? They don't get much attention compared to the 85 Bears, but maybe they were really good. They had most or all of the pieces in place.

Penbrook (that’s you, right?) I remember how much you loved and respected Alex’s game but this board, as a whole, has been very complementary and thankful of Alex’s impact on Patrick through this postseason. Even some of his largest detractors (Clay) have been expressing their gratitude.

That hate he got was a bit much, though. Especially after his injury with Washington.

Alex was amazing for Patrick’s development, though. Brady couldn’t even tolerate having Jimmy G on his team much less putting him in a position to succeed against NFL competition.

85 i mean but i was thinking what pat said about his time at the red raiders being bad. Then I looked up the records. He had only like 3 bad games. Yet the red raiders went 7-5 and then 4-8 i was shocked to see that.

Thank you i was just stunned to see pat records there.

Those of us who watched Texas Tech football were always stunned as well. The defense gave away so many games and wasted Mahomes efforts

Not just coordinators, the defensive staff as a whole. But you’re right, you can’t miss on multiple DCs back-to-back. I’ve blocked it out, but our final “statistic” was 7 DCs I’m 7 years, or 10 DCs I’m 13 years? That will set any college program back.

That’s certainly the perception, but not fact. I haven’t looked at data for the last year or two, but spanning back the last decade (the era his misconception has existed in), the Big12 was actually 2nd or 3rd in Power5 conferences in fewest Yards per play and points per play allowed. They were not to far off from the best conference either.

The difference is that the pace of play in the Big12 is significantly faster than all other conferences, so teams are on the field for more plays. By physically undertaking more snaps, offenses put up more yards and points despite the fact that Big12 defenses are performing just as well if not better than the other P5 conferences.

That said, as a Red Raider, I can attest that Tech specifically did not play defense between ~2010 and 2018. Any criticism of us is fair.

Can't help but wonder how things might have gone during Mahomes' 3 years if we kept Art Kaufman instead of replacing him with the likes of Wallerstedt/Smith/Gibbs.

I think Mahomes showed the world this year he is definitely not "a loser" as some idiots called him after his college career. Give him a halfway decent defense and he will win big. Would have done it a year ago too if the Chiefs didn't trot out one of the worst defenses in NFL history.

Good for us that his win record sucked in college. Or he would be a Bear...
