View Full Version : Chiefs Is there a WR battle brewing in KC?

"The Chiefs wide receiver room returns Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins, Demarcus Robinson, Mecole Hardman, Byron Pringle, Gehrig Dieter and Jody Fortson (practice squad), while adding Kalija Lipscomb, Aleva Hifo, Maurice Ffrench, Cody White, Andre Baccellia, and Justice Shelton-Mosely.

The Chiefs won’t keep all of these players — and some may even be gone before camp begins, as they potentially limit the roster to 80 men. The Chiefs will likely keep around six on the active roster with another one or two on the practice squad.

The smart money right now would be on the same top six that ended the year on the roster — Hill, Watkins, Robinson, Hardman, Pringle and Dieter. Hopefully, a few younger players push the bottom guy for a job."

The main battle, according to the writer, should be between D-Rob and Hardman for the WR3 spot. This could be an interesting battle, as D-Rob and Mecole are different kinds of receivers. Robinson doesn't have Mecole's speed, but plays a more physical game.

There's a lot to compare and contrast between the two, but I suddenly have a couple things I need to take care of, so I'll finish this thought later.

I don’t think Deiter and Pringle’s jobs are completely safe, but they are safer than they would have been if there was a full offseason.

Pringle likely makes it, I think Deiter is going to be PS for life since now there is no limit on how long a guy can be there. I expect Lipscomb to take the last spot.

Well, most of those undrafted guys will go straight to the garbage bin before the season starts.

And the rest of them who at least look kind of promising like Lipscomb may not have to be in much of a battle, since we're probably looking at the NFL expanding roster limits during this covid season (or at least practice squads)

You mean next season, I take it?

I think a lot will depend on how much Hardman progresses this year. Last season he averaged about 13 or so snaps a game. Though I'm not worried about Mecole's ability to progress so far.

The average game has about 65 offensive snaps per game. To take over the WR2 spot, he'd have to see at least 40+ snaps? I don't think he gets that close to that number this season, especially with the lack of reps both in practice and live game snaps (assuming there won't be preseason games). If he gets 16-20 snaps/game that would be real progress, IMO.

Where do you think he's going? Or are you assuming he'll get injured mid-season, not an unreasonable assumption BTW.

With no preseason and what is sure to be a very limited camp, you have to believe they’ll try to keep as many of last years 53 guys as possible. They won’t have much opportunity to evaluate new guys.

We picked a great year to return so many of last years players, not to mention our entire coaching staff. Teams are going to get annihilated by us early in the year.

I expect most teams to run the ball a LOT early in the season due to lack of chemistry and new additions learning the scheme. Signing Jones will be huge when were off to a 5-0 start while other teams are just starting to gell.

Read the article. It helps when trying to talk about the thread, generally speaking. But there isn't a battle, per se. Yet. It's about what could be or should be. Depending on how you look at it, or what the writer would like to see.

On the other hand with Watkins contract he is going to be very upset if he does not get lots of looks.

Since they have different styles of play. Your statement is even more bunk. Hardman is a slot speed type of WR. Watkins is more physical wideout type of WR. Robinson is more similar in styles to Watkins than Hardman.

I keep hoping that Pringle will take the next step and beat out Drob. He brings a lot of speed and quickness to the field ala Hill.

First 5 are roster locks barring injury: Hill, Sammy, Hardman, Robinson, Pringle.

Battle will for spot 6 if they even open it up as a spot: Dieter (lol), Lipscomb, Fortson; everyone else is just hoping to make the PS.

No the Article was written by Matt Lane according to the header.
He seems connected to this article. That is why I asked if he was the writer because he sure is trying to make it out to be more than what it is in all actuality.

Oh ffs. Does the writer actually have to come out and literally write the words "hypothetical scenario"?

It's a football story about the Chiefs WR group and WHAT MIGHT UNFOLD WITH THEM OVER THE NEXT FEW WEEKS.

Man, is it the fact that I quit smoking, or are you guys just being purposefully obtuse?

I'm going to give you guys the benefit of the doubt and say that it's that I quit smoking . . .

Dude you got awful defensive when most of us didn't think there was as much to the story as seem to believe. You went all caps against Pasta, I know he can be very difficult though, but then you basically did the same thing with Twisted. Hence why someone that wrote the article would be invested in the article might be "touchy" about someone reading it wanting hits and such.

There just isn't that much of a "battle brewing" Hardman and DRob are different types. A battle between Dieter and the current class of rookies is not worth all the hubbub.

Maybe you're thinking of John Lovett. He's listed as a FB but was going to be looked at as a TE possibility last year. He was an undrafted free agent from Princeton. I remember there were some glowing remarks in training camp about him16th then he got injured as I recall it.

I think you're right. In real life I've kept a good lid on it, and I haven't jumped on anyone's neck yet. But internally my patience is paper thin. I guess online I'm venting a little. Sorry about that.

I really just thought it might be interesting to talk about who among the other WRs (outside of Hill/Watkins/Hardman) might end up on the final 55-man roster. I don't know much about most of them outside of Pringle and Deiter, so I figured some of you guys might have some interesting insights.

Regardless, I came off snarky and a bit of a dick, my bad.

Pringle needs to be on the team ..purely for special teams and his blocking..

he also came up with a few big grabs this year . .

D-Rob drops the ball too much..i think Mahomes has lost trust . .good locker room guy and good YAC though. .

Dieter should not be on the team ..
