Is there a WR battle brewing in KC?
"The Chiefs wide receiver room returns Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins, Demarcus Robinson, Mecole Hardman, Byron Pringle, Gehrig Dieter and Jody Fortson (practice squad), while adding Kalija Lipscomb, Aleva Hifo, Maurice Ffrench, Cody White, Andre Baccellia, and Justice Shelton-Mosely.
The Chiefs won’t keep all of these players — and some may even be gone before camp begins, as they potentially limit the roster to 80 men. The Chiefs will likely keep around six on the active roster with another one or two on the practice squad. The smart money right now would be on the same top six that ended the year on the roster — Hill, Watkins, Robinson, Hardman, Pringle and Dieter. Hopefully, a few younger players push the bottom guy for a job." Rest of the article in link: https://www.arrowheadpride.com/2020/...wide-receivers |

The main battle, according to the writer, should be between D-Rob and Hardman for the WR3 spot. This could be an interesting battle, as D-Rob and Mecole are different kinds of receivers. Robinson doesn't have Mecole's speed, but plays a more physical game.
There's a lot to compare and contrast between the two, but I suddenly have a couple things I need to take care of, so I'll finish this thought later. |

I don’t think Deiter and Pringle’s jobs are completely safe, but they are safer than they would have been if there was a full offseason.

Pringle likely makes it, I think Deiter is going to be PS for life since now there is no limit on how long a guy can be there. I expect Lipscomb to take the last spot.

Well, most of those undrafted guys will go straight to the garbage bin before the season starts.
And the rest of them who at least look kind of promising like Lipscomb may not have to be in much of a battle, since we're probably looking at the NFL expanding roster limits during this covid season (or at least practice squads) |

You mean next season, I take it?
I think a lot will depend on how much Hardman progresses this year. Last season he averaged about 13 or so snaps a game. Though I'm not worried about Mecole's ability to progress so far. The average game has about 65 offensive snaps per game. To take over the WR2 spot, he'd have to see at least 40+ snaps? I don't think he gets that close to that number this season, especially with the lack of reps both in practice and live game snaps (assuming there won't be preseason games). If he gets 16-20 snaps/game that would be real progress, IMO. |

Where do you think he's going? Or are you assuming he'll get injured mid-season, not an unreasonable assumption BTW.

With no preseason and what is sure to be a very limited camp, you have to believe they’ll try to keep as many of last years 53 guys as possible. They won’t have much opportunity to evaluate new guys.
We picked a great year to return so many of last years players, not to mention our entire coaching staff. Teams are going to get annihilated by us early in the year. |

Read the article. It helps when trying to talk about the thread, generally speaking. But there isn't a battle, per se. Yet. It's about what could be or should be. Depending on how you look at it, or what the writer would like to see.
