View Full Version : Money Selling Car Question

Bought a new V6 Challenger Feb 2019 cash 32 or 33k , since that time it has been driven less than 2700 miles and garage kept, as close to showroom condition as it can be, smells like a new car inside.

Problem is I don't really like it that much, hard to see out of plus I have a grandbaby now and prefer 4 doors.

Dealership offered me 26,500 for the car straight up write me a check and deal done. Would you do it ?

You should put your Carr jersey on and then drive off a cliff in it.

That would be more interesting than taking the dealer offer.

I wouldn't have been so careless with $30k and would have financed when interest rates were low and invested the $25k+, easily making back interest paid on the loan plus 7%+... much less paying new car prices with no commitment towards keeping it long term.

Almost like (gasp) the scenario is too stupid to be true for anyone older than like 20.

Check out Carvana. I have a 2019 Ranger and I can get more than I paid for it from them. The issue is what can I replace it with in this current market. But in your case you just want to be rid of of it. Nice car BTW.

Repped over and over.

Paying cash for a depreciating asset when interest rates are this low is Dave Ramsey stupid.

They make this wonderful thing called "Kelly Blue Book". I put in the GT model, and a Charlotte zip code, and it says, "Trade-In 32-35k, Private Party Resale 34-36k".

Those numbers notwithstanding, ANY time you sell to a dealership you're getting less than a private party. Because the dealership is assuming all future issues with the car and absolving you of any possible problems doing a personal resale to a stranger. It's less money for you but it's a hell of a lot easier. If you don't mind haggling with a person and getting a personal check and hoping they don't come back and try to Lemon Law you into taking the car back, etc.,., sell it privately. If you want to dump it and be done, take the bigger hit and go the dealership route.

But even with the dealership route, that seems like a lowball offer.

Well your best money would come from a private sale. Post on an enthusiast site like CarsAndBids.com where the buyers will appreciate the good condition.

If you are dead set on selling to a dealer, check out carvana or carmax. They consistently offer more than a standard dealer and the entire process is quick and easy and only takes about an hour.

Nah , don't like to lose money but not stupid enough to think a 2 year old car is going to bring the same amount of money as it did when I drove it off the lot.

If I had to do it all over again would I have bought it... No, if I was going to buy something it should have been more practical. Even debt free people who manage money well have weak moments.

I guess it depends on how bad you want to get rid of it. If they are offering that much, you know they are going to try and get you to trade it in for a more expensive car. I just took my car in for warranty service today and they were trying to buy mine and get me to buy a newer version of the same car. Definitely not worth it in my case because I like my car and I paid it off a year after I bought it.

Yeah, that little bit was a great made up plot twist when a bunch of people on a football message board aren't impressed with buying a car (in cash!) when basic impulse control is no match for a shitty low end V6 Dodge.

The power of a 4 cylinder Volkswagen Golf, the weight of an American muscle car, and fuel efficiency of a V8! ...the commercial titled "Moment of Weakness" writes itself.

I give the thread 4 clowns, with a bonus "it's my wife's car" clown.

Yeah, it's just one made up story to humble brag about some other potentially made up thing, with made up responses to all of the pointing and laughing.

The only part that seems remotely believable is the stack of dollar bills.

The whole millionaire schtick, Dave Ramsey worshipping, debt free/paying for cars in cash, BRC-level of humble bragging.... yeah, the catfisher in the catfishing thread is more believable.

In terms of offseason shit-posting, I guess it could be worse.

I made this argument in the Investing thread when discussing paying off your mortgage. I got pummeled. And it wasn't pretty.

It's taken time for me to wrap my head around it, because I've always wanted to pay off things early, and there's a ton of Dave Ramsey bullshit out there about building 6 month emergency funds, paying off all debt, etc..... but, looking back now, I wish I would have put more money into my 401k ~20 years ago instead of paying off some lower interest things.

Granted, it just means I have more at the end of the month to invest these days, but definitely could have strategized better.

I sold two cars in the past to Car Max for straight cash, one was a small import the other was a customized Chevy Van. I had looked up Kelly Blue Book value before going and I found they gave me the wholesale cash price to the dollar both times.

I just did a search on https://www.kbb.com/dodge/challenger/2019/gt-coupe-2d/?condition=excellent&intent=trade-in-sell&mileage=2700&modalview=false&options=8650074%7ctrue&pricetype=trade-in&vehicleid=439280, they no longer have just the wholesale and retail prices, they have private party, trade in and now for cash price they want the VIN number and other details, they probably want to sell your info.

I didn't have all your details, I listed zip code as 27101 and the model I listed as a GT Coupe 2DR and the prices are $31,600 to $34,900. That sounded high considering what you paid, you can try it again with your exact details, then check out a Car Max website. https://www.carmax.com/sell-my-car

Yea them fuckers do anything to get you to come to them, Carvana arrives with check in hand and you don't have to go anywhere. If they come here trying to lowball me I will just close the garage door and send them on their way.

Got 500 more than the dealership offered for a car I no longer want. Will probably buy some sort of 4 door car with low miles as a replacement as we don't drive much except me going to work and I usually drive my shitbag 1999 Saturn. I have a 2006 GMC 2500 HD with like 138k on it but I want to keep the miles down on it because I have a 60 mile round trip to work everyday. Plus the 2500 don't sip gas. Also have a 2001 explorer I bought new that only has like 75k on it yet the exterior is falling apart on it , bumper rusty, the plastic molding shit coming off etc. Nothing I own have 4 doors except that Saturn with 180k on it and I don't want my grandbaby or wife driving that.

Ok the car is gone let me tell the story

I went on kbb.com
They appraised it at 26,498 and I had no intention to sell because Carvana was scheduled for Saturday pickup for 26,813

Then my phone starts blowing up , lady said she wanted it, I told her 27 was as low as I will go, she said ok and said she would call me back.

30 mins later she calls me back and said if it's just like you say we will give you 28k for it. (I only asked 27k for it 30 mins earlier) so I get in the car and drive it there 15 mins away.. 45 mins later I walk out with the check. Why in the F did they give me 1000 more than I asked for the car? O well :thumb:

Used car prices are up right now and if you see the car you want what’s another thousand to make sure it happens

Congrats, buy yourself a chiefs jersey

I don't if anyone has mentioned this guy yet but he's got a lot of good advice. Here is one of his latest vids that somewhat applies to your situation. Perhaps you can take a bit of information from this to use in your situation.

I just traded in my 19 Charger for a 19 Ram 1500. Dealership gave me a hell of an offer on the Charger and an even better one on the Ram. Pretty stoked, as I missed having a truck. Used market is bonkers right now, for sure.
