Broncos are back !!

Hate to say it, but last year was KC's last shot at the playoffs for the next couple of years. The Chiefs should have snuck in while the Broncos were down, but it is to late now. The Broncos are playing better football than any team in the AFC West (we actualy score touchdowns on offense) and look like they can compete with any team in the NFL. Definately not as good as Elway's Broncs, but still twice the team KC sends on the field each week. Hope all of you stay so positive when your team is getting beat every week.

DonkeyFan, you've got it all wrong. The last five years have been great! We can go 0-16 and I'd view the season as great. Sure, after a loss it's miserable, but watching my Chiefs play is entertainment enough. What I can't understand is how someone can be so naive to talk trash to a team who SWEPT them last season. I also can't believe how the media is so blind saying last year's bust was because Terrell was injured. The Donkey Dicks were 0-4 with Terrell and defeated at Arrowhead WITH Terrell.

They can be known as the "Cellar-Dwellers". It'll actually be a close race to see who finishes last. I think the Donx will edge out the Chargers for the Last-Place title, however.

Usually I don't use previouse seasons as a barometer for the coming season. Broncos won the Super Bowl 2 years ago and went 6-10 last year. The fact that you beat the Broncos twice last year has nothing to do will your miserable team this year. If you would like to know why I believe your team will stink in 2000, it is because your team LOOKS like they stink when they play football THIS SEASON!! If you want better reasons 1) Chiefs have a schedule that will make it almost impossible for them to reach the playoffs without winning almost all of their divisional games 2) Gunther will never let your team have the vertical offense it needs (he missuses a capable quartback that can throw the deep ball, and recievers which have great speed. If Gunther wants a great running team, he should understand that the best running teams in history have streched the field with their passing game) there are plenty of other reasons why Chiefs suck, but this post has gotten to long!

That said, you came up with a very "legitimate response". Especially the "We're still 0-0 the last time I checked" (which did a great job communicating your sarcasm). You have done your team justice!

Does anyone else have a decent FOOTBALL reason why the Chiefs might not be terrible this year? (I think DaKCMan wants to go and talk about how everyone else has figured out how to use those smiley faces in the other threads)

Here's a reason, BroncoFan.

Gunther watched a vertical offense succeed last year. St. Louis impressed Gunther even though he hasn't come out and stated exactly that. He wants to emulate them. We won't be able to do it as well but he will use his weapons this year. Gonzo demands attention! SlyMo is a great weapon and will be used extensively in his first season. Offensive line is still dominent and nearly any RB can be effective behind it. The defense, while not as formidable as in previous years, will get penetration & be better than average. My only worry is with the secondary. Pass rush will help squelch those concerns. We may not contend for much more than a wild-card this year but we'll be in the thick of things in December. 9-7 or 10-6 wins the west in 2000.

I'm glad to see that you read my posts. I'm flattered. I never said KC was going to win the division, or that we were going to stink. There is no way to tell. Your prediction is not any more valid than mine would be, and vice versa. If you want someone to contest the reasons you have given, well ok then :

A) Regular season schedules:
Yes, we have a very difficult schedule. Our most difficult games will be against Tennessee, Indianapolis, and St. Louis. We play 2/3 of those games at home. I think if we can establish a pass rush against Indy and St. Louis we can stay in the game and have a chance at winning. With Tennessee we have to play some maulball and work the play-action. The rest of the games aren't as difficult, barring the division rivalries which should all be close.

B)We haven't gameplanned for any of the preseason games. Gunther and co. have been using the preseason to evaluate players, doing simple tasks rather than showing new things. As a Chief's fan I have heard this all before, and we'll have to wait and see if we really do have a new "wide-open" offense.

C)Gunther is a very enthusiastic players coach. I think he is one of the better motivating coaches in the league. I think that sometimes he can be too loyal, however, and I just hope that doesn't sidetrack the best interests of the team.

Hey, there you go! KC does have great players both on offense and defense. If Gunther realy does have some new vertical offensive strategy the Broncos will have a difficult time stopping Elvis, especially at KC. Your schedule doesn't help, but it doesn't mean the end either. Your defense can stop any offense in the league, and if Gunther stops being so conservative, your recievers can beat most dbs in the league. No question, most running backs will be able to run with your offensive line. But this pre-season is important. It sets a standard and a mindset, and I personally think Gunther should start thinking about getting your team some confidence and momentum going into the regular season.

I agree with your final statement, BroncoFan. I would like to see some positive momentum going into the regular season. It hurt last year to lose the opener to Chicago and I partially attribute that to our pre-season strategy (or lack thereof) and an inability to adjust. Preseason is for coaches, too. They can practice the ability to modify a gameplan to WIN. Unfortunately, I'm not the coach and have no say. Thanks for the other positive words as well! It's nice to have an objective view here!

Okay, enough childish romping…

If the Broncos are indeed back, it is by virtue of their schedule. As I have stated in the past, they will contend for the AFC West title because of that pillowly soft schedule. Not because of off-season moves or coaching decisions. And certainly not because of preseason performance. It is the height of Homerism to base your opinion of your team on preseason games.

Until Griese matures [as I believe he WILL eventually mature], the Broncos will remain a mediocre team. I do not intend mediocre as an insult, as I think the Chiefs and Raiders are also mediocre teams. None of the NFL elite teams reside in the AFC West.

So I agree with BroncoFan. The Broncos are back in parity with the AFC West.

Last years quarterback issue was the best thing that could have happened. We all know Brister is not a starting quarterback in the NFL, and so did Shanni. The issue was not Brister, but that Griese was not ready to take a team to the playoffs or the super bowl (that is why Brister was even considered). But the correct dicision was made and last year turned into the year it should have been. One 6-10 rebuilding year, and because of that year most analysts feel that broncos will win the AFC West this year. To bad KC didn't try rebuilding that heap of a team. It didn't get you any further than the Broncos got, but know you are stuck with that same worthless team (you should all start a thread about trading for some decent players, or your coach, or drafting a decent runnning back)

You are definately right about the schedule. And Griese cannot be the quarterback in his second year that Gannon and Elvis are, that is true. On the other hand, Griese is almost as good as the other 2, and it will only be his second year as a starter, and he is in a system which will make him a much better quarterback quickly. Broncos, for whatever reason, will have a good year this season, and the Titans last year are a good example of what can happen to any team that sneaks into the playoffs.

Shani didn't "stick" Brister anywhere, he was pulled from the starting position during the pre-season after Brister stunk up the joint. Something Gunther wouldn't have the balls to do. I'm guessing he would have had the Broncos have a 6-10 season under Brister, and then started Griese this season just to make sure we had two crappy seasons. He's done a pretty good job making you KC fans miserable.
