View Full Version : Non-football topic beware: Is anyone besides me sick of all the gymnastics coverage?

There is basically no coverage of Baseball, Basketball, Softball, Tennis, etc. Just tons of gymnastics, human interest stories that go on too long, they only give us the swimming final. I have given up, and just get my result and data from the different Internet sites. Any other thoughts and comments?

Mosbonian

YES!!!

They might as well call it the 2000 Summer Gymnastics tournament and in the Winter call the Olympics the Winter Figure Skating tournament.

BLECH!

I did hear something interesting last night while watching the BOXING coverage on CNBC and the announcer referred to this fact by stating something to the effect that more women control the remote in the evening there it affected what they showed in prime time.

Cmon, MEN! Where's your sack?

Jim

What kills it for me is the special interest stories. I simply watch for the competition. All the other filler just gets a click of the remote from me. Gymnastics is boring this year because neither US team was very competitive.

I loved the swimming, and I can't wait for track and field. The only Bball worth watching will be the womens. The mens bball was decided back in 1992 and forever going forward.

Actually the wife and I were both complaining about this last night. You migt also call it the 2000 Politically Correct Olympics with their complete avoidance of Boxing and only summary comments on the Archery, Shooting, and Trap Shooting events.

KCTitus
09-21-2000, 10:30 AM
ABC in 68, 72 and other earlier Olympics had it right they gave you 30 to 60 second snippets on human interest stuff and concentrated on the events. I hope the ratings suck for this Olympics, but since the other networks all cooperated and put nothing on opposite that is unlikely. We can only hope next week with track and field will bring better coverage, But that is unlikely we will probably get Synchronus Swimming, Rhythmic Gymnastics, and the individual Gymanstics events spread out over the whole week.

I sick of the Olympics in general. Why? NO AMERICAN FOOTBALL.

I give less than a sh!t about shotputting, bicycling, avoiding drowning...I mean swimming, etc.

I want to see the USA Football Team, consisting of the best of the best from the NFL, vs. the North Vietnamese. Gaz would no longer have to settle for QB crushing, he could witness QB dismembering.

Clint,

ROTFLMAO on the QB dismembering, it would be fun wouldn't it?

Anyone see the Swedish chick that won the womens triathlon. She was practically wearing a thong. It was pretty awesome. Also, if you saw it, how about the dill hole that kept talking about all that dumb sh*t during the race?
They are definitly showing more womens sports. Was wondering if we could get skinny dipping in the olympics.

Logical,

The IOC has ruined Olympic boxing, anyway, with their horrible scoring system.

As far as shooting and archery, they shouldn't even be part of the games IMO, because they aren't sports...they're more like billiards or darts. There are many other events that hardly qualify as sports, IMO, like ballroom dancing.

I hear they are seriously considering making BRIDGE AND BACKGAMMON Olympic events!! I'm going to polish my "UNO" skills and win a gold medal!! Maybe I'll pick up a "Chutes and Ladders" from Toys R Us and go for a double gold performance!!!

KCTitus
09-21-2000, 10:44 AM
Clint,

The boxing is still boxing, but you are right the actual results are screwed up by the scoring system.

I'll let Kurt Surber take up the whole shooting is not a sport thing with you. It actually takes tremendous coordination and physical endurance to to hold weapons steady and be acurate, but your point is somewhat taken as well. If that is true, is badmitton (sp?)? a sport? What about sailing?

I guess it just depends on what your criteria is for determining what is a sport and what isn't. Here's my opinion:

1. To be a sport, it MUST make you sweat AT LEAST moderately, and not because you are a 350 pound bowler.
2. No outcomes can be determined by judges. The only 2 exceptions are boxing and NCAA football.
3. You must compete directly against a single team or opponent, not a "field" or a clock. Marathon running and the Tour de France are now scrathched off my list of sports. As a matter of fact, almost all forms of "racing" don't make my list. NASCAR races are won by auto mechanics and machines, and running on foot really fast is not a display of talent...just the result of having enough free time to run a lot.

I'll continue aggravating you guys after I pick up lunch!!

Clint,

LOL again, So swimming is not a sport, determined by a clock, race against a field. Guess that elimanates most of track as well. OK Clint I guess by your definition we would be watching Fencing, handball, Field hockey, soccer, football, basketball and tennis and not much else. I think you maybe did not fully evaluate your own criteria, then again considering your politics http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/tongue.gif: maybe you did, just kidding. http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/biggrin.gif:

Whatever happened to the SPORTS part in Sports broadcasting?! When did the cutesie, feel-good, rags-to-riches story about the athletes take precident over the competition?

NBC deserves to lose their a$$ in the ratings -- what a stupid move it was to lose the NFL contract, then produce Olympic coverage aimed at the Peggy Bundy market!

i'm sick of all the gymnastics too, but you know what really pisses me off? all of the
damn commercial breaks. when they were showing the women's soccer game i swear to god they were going to commercial breaks every 5 damn minutes. why is it that abc and espn can show a whole half of soccer and don't have to take commercials all the time and nbc has to take so many damn commercial breaks? thats why i don't even bother watching the olympics anymore.

I wish NBC would read this thread as there are many good points. Especially since they have the rights to the next 6 olympics or so.

NBC is wondering why their ratings are not higher. They are ruining the games for me much like CBS did to the last winter olympics.

CBS focused so much on figure skating they even showed skaters practicing rather then real competetion in other venues. NBC is almost doing the same thing with their over enthusiastic gymnastics coverage.

If anyone from NBC is listening (I realize this is a long shot since even they were stupid enough to lose the NFL), enough already. Show us as many sports as you can instead of watching every single tumbling run.

A local (St. Louis) call in sports guy came up with this definition of a sport.
"A sport must have a ball, no ball no sport."
Now he did make an exception for hockey, claiming the puck was just a smashed ball.

I haven't watched any of the Olympics because:

1) It's football season
2) The Olympics are overhyped and oversold
3) It's football season
4) Too many commercials
5) It's football season

I think my wife watches gymnastics just too make me suffer. It is the only time that she can get even for all of time I have spent watching Monday night football. I'm just glad it is only once evey four years.

Does anyone know whether the Ancient Games included team sports? All the talk about the sport has to have a ball, etc. got me to thinking about this subject. Not part of the gripe, just curiousity.

That gymnastic stuff is pretty boring. A few nights ago there was a girl that was doing the event were they run & vault themselves off of the bar. She fell the 1st time & when she tried it the second time, she landed right on her face halfway through a flip. My wife got a little perturbed when I bursted out laughing. I wish I had the VCR set so I could see it again.

Personally, the only things I will watch is:

Boxing

Hoops, mens and womens

Womens volleyball

Track,sprints and relays only.

The coverage blows by NBC. Nothing worse than Costas trying to be funny and that idiot Ahmad Rashad covering trading Olympic pins. (which cut time away from the womens v-ball match)

The other night, they were showing water polo. Water polo!?! Come on. http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

09-21-2000, 04:22 PM
Not that I would want to watch much of it, but have you tried to play water polo?! Holy Hell, that is one difficult sport! Mind you - the water they play in is 9-11ft deep!

brain140
09-21-2000, 04:27 PM
HC - Thanks! I didn't know it was really that deep. They kept saying something about the two meter somethin' or other and I thought they were saying that the water was only two meters deep. However, it was like watching grown-ups play Marco-Polo or better yet, watching paint dry. Hey, that's an idea....I can pioneer the push to get Marco-Polo into the next Olympics!

I grew up in Tennessee - down there, swimming is quite big. I was a member of the Clarksville Swim Association(CSA) - a competitive swim team. We traveled all over the country competing against other swim teams. Our pimary rivals, the Nashville Aquatics Club (NAC) produced several Olympic competitors... including gold medal winner Tracy Caucains(sp). Because of that, I actually like watching swimming competitions - I used to compete in that arena (matter of fact, won a couple of medals in the Jr Olympics) http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/biggrin.gif -- too bad I moved to Kansas... where competitive swimming is a joke - perhaps I could have been an Olympian... oh well, such is life. http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/smile.gif

Water Polo is basically soccer played in a deep pool (usually 9+ft). You NEVER touch bottom & you only get to rest during timeouts & end of period - or when you are replaced in the lineup. It is also surprisingly physical... if you have an aversion to being dunked under water - or yanked & pushed and kicked, then water polo is definitely not your sport! http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/smile.gif

HC....

Don't be so modest.... we all know you kicked *** in the Special Olympics... though I thought backpeddling was your best sport... swimming, who woulda guessed? You still sporting those speedos?

I've spent most of my life involved with water sports, but I tried playing water polo once and it kicked my *** ! bailed after 15 minutes.

BEWARE . . . . . FOOTBALL TOPIC! :

I'll tell you what I'm sick of! Everytime I turn on ESPN having to see Keyshawn Johnson holding another press conference and flapping his mouth.

"Hey, Keyshawn . . . . SHUT THE $%#@ UP!"

(sorry, had to vent a little)

The_Grand_Illusion
09-21-2000, 08:42 PM
I know Tom, I thought for a while they were just replaying one press conference. Is he pissed at the Jets or what?

About the Olympics, I agree, I would much rather watch anything other than Gymnastics constantly. There's something about watching little girls with more percent muscle to mass than most grown men, flip around and crack their skulls open when they fall. And the guy gymnastics....I shudder, it gives me the hebejebees.

I saw a piece the other day about a new event at this olympics: trampoline jumping. No that is not a typo, they have decided to give medals to people who can do pretty little flips off of a trampoline. Try to control your laughter. If this can be a medal sport, why not golf?

The human interest stories are getting a bit annoying, but I saw one about the dude from Equatorial Guinea who was competing in the 100 m freestyle got to do his preliminary all alone because the other two false started. The guy trained in a 20 m pool, and had never swam 100 meters straight through before. The guy belly flopped into the pool and about 3/4 the way threw he was practically vertical and drowning, but somehow he found enough strength to finish. It took him like 3 minutes but the crowd was going nuts, he actually thought he had won the gold. Nice moment.

LOL TBT - no doubt! What a friggin' buffoon. I liked his comment where he stated he was a 'star', Wayne Chrebet was merely a flashlight. For the record:

Chrebet: 13 154; 2TD
K Johnson: 14 180; 1TD

Pineapple - I was wondering how long you'd take for that Spc Olympics comment! You're as predictable as Jimmy Raye's Offense http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/tongue.gif

I can't fully express how sweet it is that my wish in post #35 came true. You were right Keyshawn, we shouldn't compare a flashlight to a star. Too bad your batteries ran out today. http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/smile.gif
