View Full Version : The way to beat the Donks...

Stopping Denver's offense:
<LI>Do not overpersue the run!
Denver's O Line zone blocks, which means they let the Dline chose which way they slant and just keep them going in that direction.
Bronco RB's are successful because they are patient and cut back through holes created by persuit.
<LI>Run blitz on 1st and 2nd downs. Cheat your safeties up against Griese, their WR's don't have the blazing speed to beat teams deep in the post.
<LI>Jam McCaffery at the line. He's a tough S.O.B. who kills zone coverage.

Scoring against the Donks:
<LI>Test the perimeters. They have small DE's and quick OLB's that can be run against If you have off tackle plays use them!
<LI>Pass down the seams. Their safeties are weak vs the pass.If Gonzo doesn't see at least 8 balls.... you'll lose. Sly should eat them up on a play action post pattern, if called.
<LI> Pass on 1st down. Denver's interior is very tough against the run. Trying to over power them will NOT work.

KC might be better off if Griese plays. Ferotte has a bigger arm and I think KC is vulnerable deep. Edwards and Woods are athletic enough to take away their side of the field against Griese's dip dunk style. The lack of speed in KC's RB's will hurt big time. Greg Robinson vs the tandom of Raye/Elvis is a big mismatch in Denvers favor.
Usually I would cheer for KC in this case... but after dealing with obnoxious Chief and K State fans this week... I just don't know.....
Donks 24 KC 7

I take it you're a Chiefs fan this weekend, jq.

And BTW, I did not partake in the Raider bashing. I truly wanted them to win. Screw Denver!

Denver beat us by exposing the inexperience and overexuberance of our safeties and OLB.... overpersuit caused alot of mistackles. If your defense plays their responsibilities, Denvers running game can be contained.

It pisses me off that we didn't try our TE's deep or run any WR screens.... but fumbling on your first two snaps and spotting them 17 points didn't help any.
As crappy as we played we were still in position to score the goahead TD with 4 minutes remaining.
Sorry Duck, I don't agree with your assessment of this team resembling last years team....
Every thing that went wrong is fixable. Gannon needs to stop pressing!

JQ - I read the post on the other BB of why the raiders suck or whatever. That guy was obviously on crack and I couldn't even pretend to think that anyone could have cival discussion with him.

Fraz....
Don't worry I know who did and I plan to make it a long year for them..... I had the misfortune of sitting on the plane next to a couple of idiot K State fans who made it their misson to convince me that KState should be #1 because they beat on a few cup cakes..... I wanted to toss them 5,000 feet down after 10 minutes.

Morph,

Not to worry dude, most people from KC are cool.... but every board I went to was bombarded with that KC is better than Oakland crap because they beat SD by a bigger margin.
Amazing, the Donk fans (who had every right to run smaque) were very civil....

Hopefully we'll be able to put a hurtin' on them this weekend. It is amazing how no one is giving KC a chance - even though this is essentially the same team we swept last year, plus they're banged up as hell, plus our team is better than last year's. The way the sports media gushes over those scumbags makes me want to puke. Prior to last week, I wouldn't have thought we had a snowball's chance in hell of beating them, but now I feel like we can give them a game. If our recently reformed moron coaches stick with last week's game plan, I think we can beat them, maybe even handily.

Nothing quite so sweet as stomping the Donx in their own house. Sure hope it happens.

Hawaii,
You're exactly right. Why don't you e-mail the game plan to Gun? Great take that our run will NOT work up the middle. I've noticed over the years that the fast RB's give the Donx fits. Greg Hill used to do well against them and for some reason he was always taken out after he busted a long 40 yarder. Kaufman gave them fits while Wheatly was contained easily. Anders had success last year when he shed weight and gained speed. For KC to have success running we need to keep them guessing by passing. Then and only then will we ba able to run. I hope Gun realizes this. Shoot, you never know with him, he just may try a futile run up the middle attack just to prove something to himself!@#$%%#

You're also correct about making the Chiefs defense "stay ay home". One more thing, Denver most ALWAYS HOLDS on sweeps and they NEVER get called for it. Their WR's block very well down field and I honestly think the refs are just watching them and NOT Mr. Jones and co. Go back and watch the your game last week again and you'll see, but I'm sure you already know this.

I do agree with the assessment as well, jq. I think our DL and LB's are the strongest part of our D and should know better than to overpursue (I hope).

I do agree with TX, though, that Denver's OL for some reason is given great holding latitiude on their 'bread-n-butter' running play, the sweep. The tackle or TE is allways holding.

If KC remains true to last weeks form, passing to set up the run, we will be in the game. If KC goes back to Gun's run 1950's style football, this game is a loss.

TX,

Denver actually got called for holding this past week.... talk about sarcastic applause from the stands.
I'm never one to cry about officiating but we got tagged with one horrible personal foul call that negated a 3 and 5 stop, giving the Donks a first down.... Denvers wr caught the ball and was struggling forward towards the marker.... no whistles had blown, forward progress had notbeen stopped, runner in bounds....our safety does what he was supposed to do... he wipes the wr out.... they tag us with 15..... horrible call!

I hope KC wins, but if I'm subjected to "KC is better than Oakland because we beat Denver, you didn't" crap......

If your from the AFC West, chances are your football team is not good enough to beat the Broncos. My suggestion, change the team you cheer for.

jq,
I saw the play in question. Ed McAffrey caught the ball and was struggling to gain extra yardage near the side line. He was still in bounds when he was tagged by Oakland's safety. I was watching the game at a friends house who is a Donx fan and he was also amazed (though happy) at the call. He said that it was a clean hit and I agreed. IMHO, it was based on Oakland's reputation.

hawaiinboy,

I guess the reason the Raiders lost wasn't Gannon's no look INT at the goal line or spotting the Broncos a 17 point lead.

Nice to see that Jano is perfect under 30 yards this season.

The Raiders getting robbed by the officials? Who woulda thunk it?

injun,

Thanks for pointing out the obvious..... You seem like a smart guy, can't you come up with better than jano smaque..... it's about played out already.... You guys going to punt from Denver's 25 yard line this week?

denverfan/vance.... weak.

That was a pretty shakey call. I think the ref threw the flag because at full speed, it looked like the Raider really tried to spear Eddie Mac. Replays, however, didn't bear that out. The Raiders got a make-up call just a few plays later.

Denver's oline makes it difficult not to overpursue, as the whole idea is to keep defenders moving in the direction they are going. So, not doing it is easier said than done. I'd argue that the key to stopping Denver's running game is disruption by the Dline. You let Denver's RB make their own decisions, you're dead. You get in their face and force decisions, you've got a good shot.

JQ,
I can't moderate this board, but if the Chiefs pull off the upset Sunday, I can guarantee you that no SERIOUS fan on this board will start the "Chiefs are better than Raiders because they beat the Donx". After last season's finale, we know better. http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/mad.gif<BR>

"The way to beat the Donks... "

. . . take a tire iron to Romo, a crowbar to the back of McCaffrey's knees, a sledgehammer upside the head of Anderson, a solid steel-toed boot to the groin area of Griese, a . . . . . . .

Oh, you meant playing football. My mistake. http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/smile.gif

Seriously, though.

You want to know the *secret* way to beat the Donks?

Sshhhhhh . . . . . tie the shoelaces of the Offensive Lineman together when they're not looking. http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/smile.gif

Something else about the Raiders vs Donks...McCaffrey gets free in the middle, Raiders come up to tag him cuz he's in position to catch the ball. Raiders see that Greasy has thrown the ball high, so they back off to try and intercept. But McCaffrey is so tall he jumps high and snags the catch, then picks up an extra few yards because our guys have dropped back. Maybe if they kept coming and hit the guy instead of expecting an INT they could have knocked the ball loose.

P.S. Yeah, Jano has missed some kicks (luckily, no game-losers). But our field-position kicking game has gone from worst to best in the AFC. Jano is tops at touchbacks, and our opponents average starting position is the 28 (26?). Thats a HUGE improvement over last season. He'll zero in on those crossbars, no worries.

Hey Duck: How 'bout that Lechler kid? Doesn't look like he's doing too shabby, either.

(You know...the one Bob Dole was begging KC to draft.)

WarPaint

I wasn't begging for the Chiefs to draft Lechler, but with the need for a quality punter, I would have been happy to see him picked. But at this point, you really can't argue with the picks the Chiefs made.

I'm still scratching my head about KC's "big, slow" RBs who will fail if KC tries to run up the middle.
KC gained 188 yds and 177ds rushing in 2 games vs. Denver last year with Anders, Bennett and Richardson.
Denver is giving up 5 yds a carry on rushing defense.
And finally, if the weather is nasty (cold, wet, windy), this will be a maulball contest favoring KC (straight ahead power runners vs. cutback runners).
KC has scored 83 points in their last 3 meetings with Denver (27.6 ppg) so scoring won't be the problem.
Denver's strength is the short dink pass game and KC will have to stop that.
All in all, the Chiefs look to me to be the better team, but I'm a flaming homer. :^D
