*** 2019 Prospect Tracker: Chiefs Interest / Visits / Work Outs ***
Well, we made it all the way to Overtime of the AFC Championship. With a solid draft, we could get over the hump.
This is the 8th year in a row that we will be tracking the college players the Chiefs have publicly or privately expressed interest in leading up to the NFL Draft. Here's how we did in 2018. We had 7 guys on the list end up making the roster, including 4 draft picks! Hell of job, guys! For those who are new, the way this operates is that we collectively monitor various social media sources, blogs, articles and reports for news of the Chiefs' interest in a certain player. When posted in this thread, I will update the OP to include the player. *Please provide the link to the article, the players name, position and team. I am going to try to link to player profiles when they exist, courtesy of The Draft Network, a pretty sweet new website. Let's meet some of our future Chiefs: 2019 Draft - Chiefs Prospect Tracker Offense QB Trace McSorley, Penn State Peyton Bender, Kansas RB Darrell Henderson, Memphis David Montgomery, Iowa State Devin Singletary, FAU Dexter Williams, Notre Dame Justice Hill, Oklahoma State LJ Scott, Michigan State Mike Weber, Ohio State Miles Sanders, Penn State Nick Brossette, LSU Rodney Anderson, Oklahoma Trayveon Williams, Texas A&M Tony Pollard, Memphis Johnathan Thomas, Penn State Josh Jacobs, Alabama Marquis Young, UMass Alex Barnes, Kansas State Denzel Strong, NW Missouri State Deron Thompson, Kansas Josh Caldwell, Emporia State Kendall Morris, Kansas Darwin Thompson, Utah State Jalin Moore, Appalachian State WR Andy Isabella, UMass Tyre Brady, Marshall Jakobi Meyers, NC State David Sills, West Virginia N’Keal Harry, Arizona State Hakeem Butler, Iowa State Jamal Custis, Syracuse Mecole Hardman, Georgia Terry Godwin, Georgia Deebo Samuel, South Carolina Dillon Mitchell, Oregon Kelvin Harmon, NC State Terry McLaurin, Ohio State DeAndre Thompkins, Penn State John Ursua, Hawaii Ryan Shadler, Kansas Emanuel Hall, Missouri Jeremiah Booker, Kansas Justin Hobbs, Tulsa Kyrion Parker, Central Missouri TE Dawson Knox, Ole Miss Irv Smith, Alabama Isaac Nauta, Georgia Jace Sternberger, Texas A&M Josh Oliver, San Jose St. Zach Gentry, Michigan Tommy Sweeney, Boston College Drew Sample, Washington Trevon Wesco, West Virginia Alize Mack, Notre Dame Matt Sokol, Michigan State Andrew Reinkemeyer, South Alabama Austin Burau, Missouri Western Kendall Blanton, Missouri Seth Hebert, Central Missouri OT Bobby Evans, Oklahoma Dalton Risner, Kansas State Derwin Gray, Maryland Greg Little, Ole Miss Michael Deiter, Wisconsin Michael Jordan, Ohio State Ross Pierschbacher, Alabama Trey Pipkins, Sioux Falls Tytus Howard, Alabama State Derrick Puni, Central Missouri Ethan Greenidge, Villanova G Beau Benzschawel, Wisconsin Bennett Powers, Oklahoma Nate Davis, UNC Charlotte Abdul Beecham, Kansas State Alex Fontana, Kansas Dwayne Wallace, Kansas Kevin Pendleton, Missouri Samson Bailey, Missouri C Connor McGovern, Penn State Garrett Bradbury, NC State Lamont Gaillard, Georgia Defense CB Kris Boyd, Texas Amani Oruwariye, Penn State Derrick Baity, Kentucky Blace Brown, Troy Rashad Fenton, South Carolina Rock Ya Sin, Temple Joejuan Williams, Vanderbilt Corey Ballentine, Washburn DeAndre “Dre” Baker, Georgia Byron Murphy, Washington Saivion Smith, Alabama Justin Layne, Michigan State Jamalcolm Liggins, Dickinson State (*also a wr) Brandin Dandridge, Missouri Western Duke Shelley, Kansas State Finis Stribling, Missouri Shakial Taylor, Kansas S Nasir Adderley, Delaware Taylor Rapp, Washington Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, Florida Jaquon Johnson, Miami Marquise Blair, Utah Malik Gant, Marshall Juan Thornhill, Virginia Johnathan Abram, Mississippi State Deionte Thompson, Alabama Darius West, Kentucky Doyin Jibowu, Fort Hays State Will Harris, Boston College Cam Hilton, Missouri Kendall Adams, Kansas State DE / Edge Oshane Ximines, Old Dominion Jaylon Ferguson, LA Tech Carl Granderson, Wyoming Clelin Ferrell, Clemson Jachai Polite, Florida Montez Sweat, Mississippi State Austin Bryant, Clemson Shareef Miller, Penn State Anthony Nelson, Iowa L.J. Anyone else a bit surprised we're meeting with WRs, not RBs?
|

RB's flourish in this scheme. It's not about them being stud talents. They're schemed open and all the movement of the line creates open lanes. It's not a position of need. |

Maybe the Senior bowl RBs are expected to go higher than the Chiefs expect to take a RB. I'm sure they will meet with a ton of RBs before the draft.
That being said, especially if we get a pick above 30-50 from tag and trading Ford, I would love to actually add a WR or TE this year in the 2nd. Just gotta use the 1st rounder on D and get the FA pieces in place to know you can take a guy on offense early. |
we'll probably take a RB somewhere in the draft, but probably not till rd. 4 a the earliest and I'd bet it's more likely we pick up some UDFA small school guys instead as training camp fodder and to see if any shake out.
It's just not a need when we have a lot of needs. i mean, who's 3 deep in stud RB's? We need defensive players at every level, we need OL depth and development, maybe WR's. We haven't got a second TE. All needs before RB right now. |

I've been saying all season that Boyd was tremendously over rated in mock drafts and I think senior bowl week has proven that out. He was atrocious in his time during the first half.
With that said...here's some scouting feedback on the two Longhorn targets we've talked to. My personal opinion is that if we tag + trade Dee Ford that Charles Omenihu could be an interesting take for us to slide into the LEO alongside Chris Jones in Spags defense. " The bottom line is that neither Charles Omenihu nor Kris Boyd blew the doors off the Senior Bowl in the way many would have hoped. There is good news, though. I've talked to tons of scouts and professional analysts this week and no one thinks Omenihu falls out of the second round. Sitting at the airport and typing this, I was talking to a well-known sportswriter who said hello and I told him I was writing an update on the two and asked his opinion. He said that he couldn't see Charles going any later than Day 2 (meaning rounds 2 and 3) and a scout sitting at my gate next to me overheard the conversation and agreed that he will not. Armed with all this information, I think it is fair to project Omenihu's draft floor currently as late third-round with upside to move up from there with a good combine and/or a great game on Saturday. We've seen edge guys like Ezekiel Ansah and even as recently as last year, Marcus Davenport, have a slow week of practices and then explode in the game to help their stock. Such an event for Omenihu would surely be a boon. "There were so many good DL," one scout said when I asked about Omenihu's week, "it was hard to stand out. Better using his hands. You saw his arms, but I like the way he used his hands. The (North OL) is tough." |
I really like Jaylen Ferguson out of Louisiana Tech. His motor never stops and I love how he plays with violence and is relentless in pursuit. He is projecting at the bottom of Round 1 - right in the wheelhouse....

not sure if this is where I should say this but-
I did some looking back through Spags' personnel on his better defenses. He'll play rookies in key spots and 2nd year guys. In 2007 he had a rookie corner and a couple of second year starters. So if guys can play, they'll play. |

Honestly, reading more about him after the senior bowl he might be my favorite edge rusher that we could realistically have a shot at drafting. |

RB's always do well in Reid's scheme. Always. Because, as you say, they are 'schemed open'. Hunt had some particular physical attributes, notably outstanding balance. Damien Williams is a good receiver, pass blocker, shifty runner with some power and 'want to'. He produces like a top 10 back projected over a full season. You also have Darrel Williams, who has looked like an excellent power back in limited duty. And Ware, who just a couple of years ago was your #1 back and has 4 years now in the offense. If you had to, West has also been decent. You have a stable of RB's that can all produce. Statistically speaking, however, we lost absolutely nothing when Hunt left. The production didn't drop off. When you have a top flight offense with everyone returning, including depth at RB, and a #31 ranked defense, you don't spend draft capital or FA money on RB's. Even with Hunt here, RB is like the 3rd option of this offense. |

Only so many cap dollars to go around. Big, gaping holes on defense and only so many draft picks. mid to low round RB pick, sure, perhaps. More likely a small school UDFA. |

IMO, the one position on offense that needs to be filled is a versatile TE/H-back/FB type to be a legit 5th receiving option when AR goes heavy. I think Alize Mack, Notre Dame, could fill that role. Receiving options didn't put up good numbers in ND's offense, but Mack has 4.5 speed, good agility, and is listed between 6'3'' and 6'5'' tall and 244lbs and 251 lbs. Scouts think he'll do well in a pro offense.

I am SO on the Jaylon Ferguson train.

Be sure to share updates if yall see anyone else we've met with.

I want Nasir Adderley.

Really hoping the Chiefs' 1st pick is a CB that can start his first year. Even if it means moving up for fair compensation. CB is a premium position & a position of need. Locking up a 5 yr rookie contract for a starting CB seems like a top option for the Chiefs.

To me the difference is versatility. Omenihu is a monster off the edge, but he can also hold up on the run and shows well when he is used in coverage. Todd Orlando's defense is pretty exotic and he liked to drop Omenihu back in obvious passing downs and bring pressure with the linebackers. With there being some concerns about Houston as a SAM in Spags defense, that extra flexibility and unpredictability could be a big asset. One of the things that I think would be fascinating with him is how he could be used in obvious passing downs. He was a 3-tech in Texas' 34 defense, but I think is more natural as a LEO in a 43. He could slide inside, spin Houston down to the LEO, and give us the opportunity to really create some havoc upfront. |
So far looking at a few I really like. I'm interested in Hanks too at LB. He's kind of hot and cold for me though, but he has the talent.
|
I think obviously we need to target a CB(or two) high, a late round flyer CB or potentially even undrafted would be Brian Peavy from Iowa State. According to PFF he was one of if not the best CB’s in the nation this year and on their awards, he was first team All-American. Classic example of a guy who doesn’t kill in in combine drills, but is a great football player and classic example of someone who could easily be a steal.
|
Our position needs are CB, Safety, ILB, DT, OG.
At CB, I like Greedy Williams(Early 1st), Trayvon Mullen(Early 2nd), Amani Oruwariye(Early 2nd), or Kris Boyd(Mid 2nd) At Safety I like Deionte Thompson(Mid-Late 1st), Johnathan Abram(Mid 2nd), Juan Thornhill(Mid-Late 2nd), Jaquon Johnson (Early 3rd), or Lukas Denis(Mid 3rd) At ILB I like Devin White(Early 1st), Mack Wilson(Early 2nd),Tre Lamar (Mid 3rd) At DT, I like basically all of them that can be taken in the first 3 rounds. At OG, I like Beau Benzschwal(Early 3rd) |
Can’t overlook TE2. Huge hole currently.

Resign Kelvin Benjamin's fat a** and teach him to block

I'm saying RB is not a priority; we have 2 that have played well and two more that we could re-sign that are average to above average if we want. There will be UDFA's in camp, and perhaps a late round pick because that's how you run an NFL franchise. There's not a NEED at the position. If you want to talk about offensive needs, we will likely NEED a C, could use a G, and have only one TE. On defense, we likely need 4 or 5 guys, depending on who we keep of the higher paid older cats; most of whom are injured a lot. Most of whom I would imagine, they let go. |

My favorite possible Chiefs in this draft-
Oruwariye, Ferguson, D. Baker. It is plausible that we could nab all three in the first two rounds. |

Khaleke Hudson out of Michigan would be a GREAT fit for the blitzing safety in Spagnuolo's scheme. Bet we could get him with our 3rd.

Ive been watching all the mocks and have seen all three taken within striking distance of our 1st and 2nd, and with another #2 and maybe even a low #1st for Ford it could happen. |

He is more Deone Buchanon-esque than the fit of a traditional SS/FS. They blitzed him from the slot corner position a shit ton in the Bowl game. He is physical and likes to hit, but rather pedestrian in coverage. I question his versatility. If the Giants do not tag Collins, I believe he will be a Chief. Spags loves him. |
There's like 3 safeties I think we can get with our second pick.
Juan Thornhill(Virginia), Jaquon Johnson (Miami), or Lukas Denis(Boston College). |
Also we can decide on Abram after the combine. If he runs a sub 4.6 40, I think he'd be fine.
