*** 2018 Prospect Tracker: Chiefs Interest / Visits / Work Outs ***

Annnnd another playoff run, and a winning season has us drafting at the tail end of each round, except this year, we *currently* don't have a 1st round pick.

This is the 7th year in a row that we will be tracking the college players the Chiefs have publicly or privately expressed interest in leading up to the NFL Draft.

Here's how we did in 2017. We've done better in the previous years, but not so much last year, one of the many reasons I was slow to start one this year. After a few DM's, I decided to do it again as we run up to the final month.

For those who are new, the way this operates is that we collectively monitor various social media sources, blogs, articles and reports for news of the Chiefs' interest in a certain player. When posted in this thread, I will update the OP to include the player. *Please provide the link to the article, the players name, position and team.

I am going to try to link to player profiles when they exist, courtesy of draftbreakdown.com, or the NFL Draft Tracker. For some of the lesser-known guys, it may just be a random video or profile from their team website.

Let's meet some of our future Chiefs:

I know in the past that some posters kept a pre-draft tracker of sorts regarding prospect visits, combine interviews, etc.

This Fanpost from AP is a good starting point for you draftniks to start deciphering Veach’s draft puzzle....
Credit to AP poster WesternChief for the work.

Said this in the other draft interview thread, but is it surprising that not many DT's have been interviewed? 8+ safeties and corners met with, only 5 DT. Either we're going secondary with the top 2 picks or there aren't many DT's the Chiefs like?

This is what I expect. I think we trade up into the late 30s or 40s and grab a defensive back. Hughes would fit the press man scheme very well and provides insurance at an immensely valuable position with Nelson and Amerson set to be FAs next year.

Q: Did you speak with the Chiefs at all?
“Yeah, I spoke with them at the informal meetings a bit. It went really well. They just got a new member of the staff that was on my team as a player with me this past year (Whittingham).

He’s a real good guy. So I was talking with him and talking with the scouts there and the coaches. I thought it went really good and that I fit in their scheme really well.”

LOWELL LOTULELEI

Q: Have the Chiefs reached out to you at all?

Wow, the links to the previous year’s visit are quite revealing.

2013: Fisher, Kelce and Bray
2014: Aaron Murray, DAT and LDT
2015: Da’Ron Brown, Akeem Hunt (acquired in 2017), Mitch Morse, Marcus Peters, Ramik Wilson, RNR and David Irving
2016: Kevin Hogan, Demarcus Robinson, Dadi Nicolas, Reggie Ragland (acquired in 2017) and Terrance Smith (UDFA).
2017: Pat Mahomes.

Yeah, last year was kind of a dud. We didn’t gather a lot of names, but I also don’t recall many draftees talking about the Chiefs having interest prior to the draft. Usually that’s one of the first questions a reporter asks them in the pressers.

I think damn near our whole draft class will be in this list; we’ve never had this many names, I don’t think. Still 4 weeks left, too.

Better get familiar with these guys.

What’s most surprising to me about last year’s reported visits is that they didn't meet with Kareem Hunt or Ukeme Eligwe, two guys they drafted in which additional picks or a player was involved.

Siran Neal was likely the real draw at the Jacksonville State pro day. Former corner converted to safety with formidable coverage skills.

Dante84 04-05-2018 01:02 PM

These TE's are pretty "meh." Haven't watched a ton of tape on these other positions yet, either, though.

For those who follow this more closely, what names on this list should get me/us excited?

My issue with this TE class is that the good ones will likely be over-drafted. The top talents project to be average starters and each with a bit of warts to their game, namely an inability to in-line block.

The pass catchers are just that - they do little to no blocking and are flex/slot alignment guys: Goedert, Gesicki, Thomas, etc.
The in-line guys don’t seem to have a lot of receiving threat upside.

I like Goedert a lot, but I think KC needs a more versatile guy who can factor in the run game. If I’m KC, I try to get Marcedes Lewis on a cheap one year deal. They investigated Ben Watson, so maybe that is a sign they are not enamoured with what the draft presents in terms of value/versatility, but they have met with a number of TE draft prospects...

staylor26 04-05-2018 01:57 PM

If we don’t get a safety on day 2, I love Neal in the 4th.

They investigated Ben Watson, so maybe that is a sign they are not enamoured with what the draft presents in terms of value/versatility, but they have met with a number of TE draft prospects...

Have any thoughts about the rest of the guys in this list?

I want to know who I should be excited about from this group of guys.

What intrigues me about Fountain is that in a lot of his game film, when he was running go routes it looked like he was not getting a ton of separation from defenders, but more often than not he would come down with the ball which I attribute to his outstanding athleticism. He high points the ball well and times his jumps with precision. Great hands too.

The main thing that caught my attention however, was how good he was with scramble rules. Whenever the NIU quarterback had to scramble or escape the pocket, Fountain would seamlessly adjust his route, find open space, and track the ball buying his quarterback time and making big plays off of his ability to read the situation. This made me salivate thinking what he could do with Mahomes and his improvisational abilities...

With the combine numbers he put up he might have boosted his stock to be a fourth or fifth round pick when many had him pegged as a seventh rounder or even undrafted free agent.

I see Punter Michael Dickson on the list. Is it possible we draft this guy and cut Colquitt or is that not an option since Colquitt resigned ?

Not an option with the dead money it would cost.

kccrow 04-07-2018 05:10 PM

There are at least 4 legitimately good punters in this year's draft class. Re-signing Colquitt before the draft was a colossal mistake, but this team is really good at it.

The difference between a rookie and Colquitt's cap hit is probably ~$1.5m, I agree it is a mistake but I wouldn't call it colossal. ~10% of total cap being dead on the other hand...

I think tomorrow I'll put the data back together on punting that I put together a few years ago and repost it. I have a real hard time watching this team overpay punters and there's a reason for it.

Have you had a looked at Lasley and Coutee's film? If so what did you make of them? Lasley met with our WR coach for an hour at the combine, and then had a private workout with the Chiefs a couple of days ago. I think there's a very strong chance that he's the man they like. He's quick, a very good route runner, can play slot and outside etc, I think he'd fit the system very well. Whilst Coutee met with Chiefs at the combine too and Is very quick and of course has a history with Mahomes.

Chiefs for sure visited with Jesse Ertz, QB, Kansas State...

I think Coutee is a great slot fit, while Lasley makes for a better X receiver. Coutee tested better with a faster 40, a stronger bench and was marginally better in the jumps.
Lasley has a knack to track the deep ball well and is a smooth route runner with excellent hands. What impresses me most about Coutee is his acceleration after the catch. Both could be great additions but I feel the slot position may be targeted and thus maybe Coutee gets the edge.

I would not be shocked however to see the Chiefs move on from Conley and/or Robinson. Veach’s quote some time ago regarding getting receivers to fit what the offense will do with Mahomes resonated with me. I think they are not done re-shaping the offense by any means.

Yeah Coutee lined up pretty exclusively In the slot, but having watched a bunch of film on Lasley, he would go outside on the left and right hand sides, plus line up In the slot and be very effective too. If we get Lasley, it would allow Reid to cause all sorts of problems because he could move Lasley and Hill inside and outside without a problem.

I'd be happy with Lasley or Coutee tbh. Coutee hasn't had a workout with the Chiefs thus far though which is why I'm starting to think that Lasley might be their man.

No team in the league can blow as much money on the likes of a punter and a fullback as the Kansas City Chefs, neither of which have a significant impact in the W/L column. I haven't had time to gather the data again, but when I have the time I'll show you once again that there isn't a significant correlation between having a good punter and having a winning football team. Paying 4 million per for a punter is about as stupid as paying 4 million per for a 3rd string quarterback.

I’d be shocked if he gets out of round 2, but I really like him too. I’m of the belief slot receiver is a bigger than perceived need and Miller would truly electrify the offense. Nelson Spruce and DAT? Yeah right...

Except that they aren't making$4 million per each. Not quite that combined actually. Colquitt is at about $2.5 million per, and Sherman $1.1 million, about league minimum.

I totally agree that a slot receiver is a big need and I fully expect the Chiefs to draft one. Miller (visited the Chiefs) , Lasley (spoke to the Chiefs at the combine and then visited the Chiefs) or Coutee (spoke to the Chiefs at the combine) would probably be the front-runners I guess.

I don’t see what’s so funny. He’s a round 2-3 prospect according to most. I think he’s a 2nd round talent, but the only real consensus is that he’s a top 100 player and a day 2 pick. Besides, I wasn’t even saying he will be there, because he shouldn’t. I was just saying where I would be willing to take him if I’m the Chiefs. We can’t afford to spend our 2nd on a WR.

I got him at the end of the 3rd in the CP mock FWIW. That means nothing, but I’ve seen plenty of mocks with him in the 3rd. I think you look at your grades as gospel, which proves my point about you being an annoyingly arrogant poster at times. Guys go lower than you’d expect every year. We don’t have the resources to scout these guys like the pros. There’s so much we don’t know and you aren’t aware of that at all.

With all that said, I thought you blocked me? You accused me of trying to get the last word yet you continued to reply even after threatning to block me like a pillowbitergot. I decide to let you get the last word and end your butthurt, then you engage me in another thread. You’re a strange dude.

Then who are you basing it on?

Based on where guys like Matt Miller, Scott Wright, Lan Zierlein/nfl.com, Daniel Jeremiah, and Mike Mayock have him ranked he’s a late 2nd-3rd round prospect. Most of those guys have him in round 3. You’re full of ****ing shit if you say otherwise.

Hog's Gone Fishin 04-18-2018 03:23 PM

Looking at the number of prospects they've met with CB and Edge rushers are top priority. On offense its clear they'd like another TE/WR

Quick to forget these same jackasses were mocking him in the first to Carolina just 2 months ago?

He's the safest WR prospect in the draft, again according to several of these guys. Many other guys have endorsed his play, like Steve Smith.

So now that these media pundits have written some scouting reports listing him as a 2nd to 3rd prospect, he's going to drop from late 1st consideration to midway through the 3rd? I doubt it. I'd say they have it right in saying 2nd round. He's rated by most outlets in the top 6 to 7 receivers in the draft. It depends on who you read.

My personal thought? He doesn't make it past 45 to Green Bay. I'd be thrilled if he dropped to 54 and KC made him their pick, but I have zero faith he makes it anywhere near 78. There are plenty of teams in the top of the 2nd and even up to the Chiefs pick that could use a guy like him, including Cleveland, Indianapolis, Miami, New England, Green Bay, Arizona, and Baltimore. Carolina could easily make a jump from 55 if they don't go receiver in 1. Even IF he somehow slides to round 3, most of those teams pick again before KC at 78.

I just don't see how you can confidently say what you said. But I'm the one full of shit.
