Willis joined the Chiefs as an unrestricted free agent on July 31st

Chiefs offensive tackle Ray Willis has decided to retire from the National Football League. He notified team officials of his decision on Friday. Willis was signed by the Chiefs as an unrestricted free agent on July 31st. He was added to the roster one day after veteran offensive tackle Tony Ugoh announced his retirement five days into training camp.

A five-year NFL veteran, Willis played in 44 career games (26 starts) with the Seattle Seahawks (2005-09). The 30-year old joined the Chiefs after brief stops with the Miami Dolphins (2011), New Orleans Saints (2011) and the New York Jets (2012). He originally entered the NFL as a fourth-round draft pick (105th overall) of the Seahawks in the 2005 NFL Draft out of Florida State.

Willis’ retirement leaves the Chiefs with four offensive tackles. He was competing with third-round draft pick Donald Stephenson<nobr></nobr> and second-year pro David Mims for the swing tackle job behind starters Eric Winston and Branden Albert<nobr></nobr>.

Willis was listed third on Kansas City’s depth chart at right tackle behind Winston and Mims. He appeared at that position in the Chiefs first preseason game vs. Arizona. He took part in Kansas City’s final training camp practice in St. Joseph, Mo. on Thursday.

The Chiefs have also worked second-round draft pick Jeff Allen<nobr></nobr> at offensive tackle. Allen’s primary position is left guard, though he started 47 games at offensive tackle for Illinois.

These fools can't take the punishment from Hali and Houston.

They're retiring because they know they won't earn a roster spot.

Wow, how will we replace his production?

this

it's amazing just a few years ago the depth on this team was awful and we had to start guys like Barry Richardson.

And now we have so much young potential that NFL veteran just coming to compete for a paycheck are tapping out to save face from being flat out cut

Good post and you are probably right. Stephenson must be doing well.

I still can't believe we got Willis from San Francisco. He would've been a great inside linebacker in our scheme.

I still can't believe we got Ray from Baltimore. He would've been a great inside linebacker in our scheme.
