Pretty much this. EB did get Howell to play some good-to-great games, statistically. 7 or 8 games with a PR over 90, 6-7 games with a QBR over 50, with a couple in the 70 range. That's decent for a rookie QB.
But he also exposed him to a lot of abuse from pass-rushers. He tried to operate the Chiefs' offense; 70% passing vs. 30% rushing. And when it became obvious that he didn't have the QB/OL to be successful, he didn't adapt/modify his gameplans. That inability to self-evaluate and adjust is a big red flag to league owners/GMS.
