You should pay attention to this post. However just to note, ERD Commander is now called Microsoft Data and Recovery Tools, or MSDaRT. It has two applications in particular that could likely help you out. Disk Commander and File Restore, which will let you recover deleted or damaged partitions, folders, files, etc. And you can connect your new external or another USB flash drive and copy them from the damaged disk.

It's a great all around boot disk that also does many more helpful things.
