So...Did the game pass them by while they were away?

Bill Parcels, Dallas Cowboys: 3-7
Joe Gibbs, Washington Redskins: 3-7
Dick Vermeil, Kansas City Chiefs: 3-6

All are coaches who were extremely successful, took time away from the game for one reason or another, then returned...

That is up for question as is indicated in your thread starter.

That's not what they thought they were trading for... I don't know if I'd call the team a mess but there's no way you can call the Skins a "solid" team while calling the Chiefs a "mess". Then again I guess people want to do that because the Skins are what most people want the Chiefs to be, a team with several high profile free agent pick-ups.
I'm not calling them a solid team. I'm calling them a team with easily defined problem areas, with signs of solidity outside those problem areas. That is different than the Chiefs, who can fold from any position.

What areas are the Redskins "solid" in exactly that makes them so much more easy to figure out than the Chiefs?

You must have missed the memo. Martz was responsible for the SB win. DV had to be dragged along kicking and screaming.

Oh, a top ranked D that has only twice given up more than 21 pts is a good start.

If the Chiefs O had only two games scoring less than 28, it'd be easier to figure out. 'Course then, we'd be 7-2.

Mike Martz couldn't find his azz with two hands, a map, and a dog's nose...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

Yet ironically, all it takes for him to find a dog's ass is a flip of his zipper.

The Skins are 8th in scoring defense and 31st in scoring offense. The Chiefs are 3rd in scoring offense and 28th in scoring defense. I just don't see it. I don't think allowing more than 21 points is the equivalent of scoring 28 or more points every game... 21 ppg is middle of the pack defensively, 28 ppg on offense is usually right at the top. On top of that, the Skins have played a schedule full of teams that are just not very good on offense... Dallas, Detroit, Tampa, Chicago, Baltimore, etc. The only two real elite offenses they've faced are Philly and Green Bay, and both teams lit them up for 28 points. Not very impressive.

They're not facing myriad problems, they're facing a few, evident, problems.

Both Peyton Manning's and Troy Aikman's rookie seasons were a mess by your standards, but not by the standards of those in the know.
I agree with Baby Lee, the Redskins could be a contender with 1 maybe 2 players. The Chiefs are so fouled up they need a minimum of 4 or 5 and that is if none of the good ones retire (unlikely IMO). This team is ready for a total collapse next year if three people retire who are definitely possible. Roaf, Shields, and Richardson. Not to mention the possibility Priest could retire.
