Wow. what a game. I had an important meeting of the minds scheduled for yesterday at 3pm. We scheduled it in November... heh. SO I didnt get to watch the game. Thank Allah for Tivo. I came home... stayed offline... listened to a CD... so I wouldnt hear the outcome.
I had a splitting headache so went to bed at 8pm as wife was watching Oscars. I got up at 530am and watched the game without knowing ANYTHING about it the result. It was very nerveracking for 530 in the morning. Wow. what a game. We needed that. 32 by Big Dub. wow. |

And I was surprised by Packer (or was it Lundquist?) when they said Giddens is worthless if he can't hit the open 3. But many of us have been saying that for weeks. Giddens defense has not been very good, either. I say play Lee and Hawkins in his place. At least until Giddens gets his head out of his ass. Did you notice that Giddens didn't play the last few minutes of the game after he didn't close out on one of OSU's shooters (allowing a long range shot to be made)? Finally a good coaching decision by Self on Giddens. |

Here's to all the ACC-humping analysts at ESPN
Just an awesome game... with how OSU was shooting, my heart stopped during that last shot, which seemed like 4 days. I was really trying not to give into "the sky is falling", since it consisted of a double OT loss which we kept fighting back, an OT loss which we sucked but were still in the game, and then the OU loss in which we came back from 17 and had a chance to win....... so much toughness, but on the wrong end. Down by 7 with a few minutes left, we found a way this time... 1) Illinois (duh) 2) Wake Forest (they did beat UNC ) 3) Kansas (as long as they win their last two, and one or two in the Big 12 tourney) 4) UNC or OSU

Here's some thoughts on Giddens.
Everyone says it's easy to guard him because all he does is shoot 3's. That is true to a certain extent but, not entirely factual. KU does set screens for him as well as get him the ball on inside out plays from Simien or from dribble penetration by the guards. The problem, IMO, is that he has been missing those wide open 3's lately. Last year and most of this year, that has been his specialty. He was a pure 3 point shooter. On defense, he has long reach and can make it difficult for a guy to shoot over him. He just needs to learn to move his feet faster. Although I don't think this has been as much of a problem as just being a lazy defender. He needs to close out hard on shooters every time. He allowed an OSU guard to shoot an open shot late in the game yesterday because he didn't close out. That is why, IMO, Self benched his ass for the remainder of the game. He also has shown signs of being a good rebounder. Some games I've seen him get up really high to secure rebounds. He needs to do this much more consistently. If he does this consistently, he can be a valuable player. Also, I have wondered if Self forcing him to think more about driving the ball has played on his psyche. It seems to me that ever since that was first mentioned, I've seen a little hesitation on his shots. Probably the NBA dreams have contributed as well. In any case, he needs to get his head on straight. Stop thinking about the NBA and just shoot the damn ball. I think he needs to ride the pine for now. Make him a sub. If he's hitting shots (especially the 3's) and playing some defense, then he gets more playing time. If not, he's no good for KU's NCAA Tourney aspirations. Self should have this figured out by now. I'm just wondering if Self doesn't want to destroy Giddens psyche for his remaining collegiate career by benching him. Personally, I think it would do JR some good. |
