Update from Baghdad.

COL Schmitt wrote,

"Great job in helping us get the message out. We had over 4,800 hits on
the web site on the 3rd, outstanding. All of us here owe you a cold one
for the great help in passing this on to all the great the Chiefs fans
back home. I'm buying at the Cincinati Game."

Way to go Chiefs fans!

ps, I didn't hear it myself, but heard that CP had some good words to say about video on his radio show last night!

From the COL

"I did two interviews, 1st one was with KMBC Channel 9.
They will be editing and airing the interview at 6:00 pm today. That
would be the station to tape. The second was with CBS in Wichita. Both
interviews were basically asking and responding to questions about our
unit and how the mission was going here in Iraq. No questions on
"Operation Raider Hater." "

Thought I would pass along!

Operation Raider Hater way for soldiers to celebrate Chiefs
By Peter Euler
Special to The Capital-Journal
BAGHDAD, Iraq -- You don't have to spend much time on an overseas logistics base to recognize the importance of sports to soldiers in the U.S. Armed Forces.Televisions in most Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) facilities are turned to sports channels, while many dining facilities (DFACs) have flags, pennants and banners reflecting the soldiers' favorite sports teams.

This dedication to sports is no different for the soldiers of the 169th Corps Support Battalion, a Kansas Army National Guard unit based out of Olathe. The 169th is scheduled to return home soon from its year-long deployment to Iraq, during which more than 700 active component and National Guard Solders have operated a critical logistical hub, providing around-the-clock combat service support for the Victory Military Base Complex and the Baghdad area of operations.

During the NFL season, the soldiers' loyalty is to the Kansas City Chiefs. Their dedication was shown on Oct. 15 when the soldiers traveled to a weapons qualification range at Camp Riva Ridge on the Victory Base Complex. That afternoon, the 169th decided to use a different target to qualify their individual and crew-served weapons -- a large Oakland Raiders helmet crafted from Styrofoam. The training event was scripted and filmed to energize Chiefs fan and has found its way to numerous local blogs and Web sites. The exercise was dubbed Operation Raider Hater."The majority of the 169th soldiers are big Chiefs fans," explained 169th CSB 1st Sergeant Kelly Stubbs. "The majority of them are from Kansas. For those that were involved with Operation Raider Hater, they were real hyped and eager to go and make this mission happen. It was a lot of fun for them."And the operation has been a critical success.

The 169th's Web site, 169csb.com, was averaging just over 100 hits a day. When the video was posted on the company's Web site, it went from the average of 100 hits a day to a whopping 4,800 hits on Thursday."The object was to have fun and show our support to the Kansas City area community," Col. Robert F. Schmitt, 169th CSB commander, said. "We wanted to fire up the fans and the Chiefs for the Raiders game. This was a pretty good informational operations campaign."Operation Raider Hater was the brainchild of MAJ Kevin Olson, Multi-National Corps-Iraq (MNC-I) Public Affairs Officer (PAO) and MAJ Matt Bedwell, 169th CSB Executive Officer.

Back home, MAJ Olson serves as the Public Affairs Officer for the Minnesota National Guard. Bedwell and Olson are old friends who attended the Quartermaster Officer Advanced Course together over 13 years ago. When they ran into each other recently in Baghdad, Olson approached his former classmate with the idea.MAJ Bedwell explained, "We were eating dinner and Kevin said, 'You know, I've got this idea for something the 169th could do; they could do something for a Chiefs game.'"Kevin asked, 'What Chiefs game would you like to do?' I said, 'The Raiders game at Arrowhead on Nov. 6; it's always the biggest game of the year.'""Kevin told us what we needed to do. He said to build this big Raiders helmet and go do our thing and here we are, about to light it up at Caughman Range in Baghdad freakin' Iraq" Bedwell added, shortly before the soldiers opened fire on the helmet.Olson said he was impressed with the work put into "Operation Raider Hater" by the 169th CSB soldiers."I was surprised at the amount of creativity and enthusiasm these Kansas City soldiers displayed," Olson said. "From my perspective, it was very easy to coordinate a video that really captured the enthusiasm that the 169th CSB has for the Kansas City Chiefs."

Bedwell had no problem receiving the full blessing of Schmitt, a life-long Chiefs fan."I'm a huge Chiefs fan, so I wanted to do whatever I could to support this," Schmitt said. "It's neat no matter how you do it. Having gone through this season after season, the rivalry between the Chiefs and the Raiders, it always gets to be a big deal. Supporting this -- is good for troops' morale as well. It does a good job of getting some additional press for what we're doing over here -- in a positive way."And while it was a typically oppressive, hot afternoon in Iraq, unlike the seasonably cool temperatures found in October in the Kansas City area, 169th soldiers showed up in droves for the event and displayed their team spirit."It gives the soldier a sense of home because being deployed to Iraq, we don't have a lot of things we take for granted back in the states. Being able to just turn your TV on and watch the ballgame when it comes on or actually, physically being able to go to the field and go out to the park and actually watch the ballgame," Stubbs said. "We can't do that over here -- Even though we're in the middle of a combat zone, we can still follow what's going on back home. -- If for just a short while, their mind was away from the war and it was focused on the team and the sports team back home."Stubbs said there is no question that the soldiers of the 169th will be cheering on their Chiefs from Iraq on Sunday, where the game will kick off at 9 p.m. local time."Overall, it was a good deal," he said. "A fun day was had by all and the soldiers are really psyched for the Oakland-Chiefs game. We just hope the Chiefs pull this one off."

Coordinating this kind of event is nothing new to Olson."In my role as the Minnesota National Guard PAO, I have had a chance to work with professional sports teams in Minnesota," he said. "One of my goals here was to be able to work with other military units to interact with sports teams in their communities. "Whenever soldiers approach me with an idea to connect with one of their local sporting teams, they really show a lot of passion -- It helps service members connect with home and connect with the teams that are unique to their home, whether that's college teams, professional teams or even a high school team. It allows them to make that connection from a war zone. It allows them to rally around an event. That really increases morale."

John,

Looks like you got us in the Oakland papers as well, I'm sure they just
wish they had thought of it 1st. One of the cameramen who shot the
video from the PAO office was a Bronco's fan. He thought the whole idea
was great. I'm sure he was going to pick-up a rifle and join us if he
didn't have a job to do.

Go Chiefs,

Rob

Nice job Chiefs fans, the "buzz" got this into the paper, I didn't send them this!

Game Day!

The troops of 169th csb had a little good karma Sunday night, the Chiefs vs Raiders wasn't the game shown on AFN, but the network changed to our game for the last 2 minutes, needless to say, some happy Chiefs fans in Baghdad when LJ scored.

More good karma, ran into CP outside Arrowhead Sunday, he was truly excited to send the following message to the 169th.

Thanks for getting the buzz out KC!

Great finish, karma???

What a game!
