OSU thrashing Texas.

This is a very good defensive battle. OSU up 26-19 at the 2 min. mark of the 1st half.

Where was he on the court? I don't think you can just hang out if you're way beyond the 3 point line.

He was being guarded. Anyone who has the ball and there is a defender within like 2 or 3 feet gets the 5 second count dribbling or not, no matter where you are on the floor.

Completely agree. I'm a big OSU fan (living in lawrence of course) and I have watched all of their televised games this year. This was the first game i've seen from them where they played, for the most part, like you are supposed to play basketball. Defense, rebound, and find the open man on offense. That was the best looking game i've seen from the pokes in a long time...well, since last March. OSU is going to be good next year, they just had to suffer through some big growing pains this year.

IF you ever notice an official spreading his arms out during play (kind of like a sideline warning signal in football) he's saying, "The defender is too far off for a 5 second count to start."

not so sure about that ...

this lost hurts Texas alot more than it helps OSU

a win of OSU means nada for KU now ... a win over a top 10 ranked team counts a ton.

The RPI formula is (1) 25% team winning percentage, (2) 50% opponents' winning percentage, and (3) 25% opponents' opponents' winning percentage.

Last year they added (road vs home). You get 1.4 for road victories 1 for neutral W's and 0.6 * for home.

So...We've played or will play both. They both count the same for (2) opponent's win pct. OSU's goes up and doesn't hurt us as bad, and Texas's goes down which balances that out.

They are both on the road, so no difference there.

It's a lot different than the Sagarin Ratings that factor in quality of wins. If what you mean is that it hurts us in terms of national perception or quality of wins for the tournament committee, that might be true.

but doesn't the team rankings effect their overall RPI

they always talk about quality wins in the RPI system

winning a game against a top 10 team is a bonus

not really sure how it all works though

They make it more confusing than it should be.

Basically the RPI is totally separate from your quality wins. Sometimes people use the RPI to gauge whether or not a team is a quality opponent, or a win is a quality win.

Both quality wins and RPI are separate, but important criteria that the selection committee uses.

I think if TX hadn't lost, then a KU victory would've looked better to the tournament committee as we'd have been only one of 3 teams to beat them. So i think your intuitions are right. But just technically speaking (since I'm a stat nerd on Chiefsplanet and all) the game could not have had any effect on our RPI even if a meteor had hit the gym and the game was cancelled.

Had this explained to me tonight. The guy can stand alone for the remainder of the shot clock if he is uncovered. The moment he becomes guarded, he has 5 seconds to pass, shoot, or make a concious move in the direction of the basket. If he does not, it doesn't matter if he dribbles the entire time or not, it is a 5 second violation.
