Royals sign 4th rounder Tim Melville

http://kansascity.royals.mlb.com/new...t=.jsp&c_id=kc

Royals come to terms with Tim Melville
08/15/2008 11:49 AM ET
MLB.com

KANSAS CITY -- The Kansas City Royals today announced they have reached an agreement with fourth-round draft choice Tim Melville. Consistent with team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

"We are very pleased to announce the signing of Tim Melville. Tim, his family, and advisor Jason Cook remained committed to this process from start to finish," said Deric Ladnier, Royals Senior Director of Scouting. "Tim is a very talented young man and we are excited that we were able to add a player of his caliber to the Royals organization."

Melville is the 2007 Aflac National High School Player of the Year recipient. The 6'5" right-hander from Wentzville, Mo. finished his senior campaign with an 8-1 record, a 2.56 ERA, and 89 strikeouts in 52 innings. As a junior, Melville compiled a 10-1 mark with a 0.89 ERA which helped Holt High School reach the Missouri Class 4-A finals.

We have until 11pm cst to sign Hosmer and Ryan Curl...glad we got Mellville, considered at the 15th slot in the 1st round but dropped due to signability issues.

He's spending money now. I love it. Keep it up. Your logic has been brilliant throughout this thread. What's that about never failing to get a draft pick signed?

At this rate, we can hope that our payroll will soon match money given to us in revenue sharing.

Yep, he's never failed to sign a 1st round pick - pretty hard to grasp for you, huh? Once again in the Moore era, the Royals go well over slot on a 1st round pick, spend a ton on the draft, and a few idiot fans don't have anything to cry about for the time being.

Can't wait until next year where you're back here complaining about how cheap Glass is and that we'll probably not sign our 1st round pick. Simpletons are so fun to converse with.

GLASS IS CHEAP! GLASS IS CHEAP! GLASS IS CHEAP!

Do you understand that Glass has been around longer than '05? He's the common denominator, ace. Before '05 picks were largely made BECAUSE THEY'D SIGN, so this is the weakest piece of evidence I've seen on here in a long time. You're convinced that Glass has changed. Great. I'm not.

This year's draft is a MAJOR step in the right direction. Let's see if he keeps this rolling by continuing to add to the ML payroll, which is much needed.

You calling others names is pretty funny, actually.

Of course, and not one person in this entire thread has argued that he's been Steinbrennerish during his tenure here. He certainly made mistakes early on and was cheap - NO ONE IS DENYING THAT. However, he has also changed his ways over the last few years, evidenced by increased spending on the draft, in FA, and in Latin America. If you can't see that, then again, you are a simpleton.

Can't you say that about any GM? "Well he's doing good, but let's see what he'll do in the future". Wow, no duh Sherlock. Bottom line, Glass was cheap in the past, but has done a complete 180 over the past few seasons during the Dayton Moore era. I'm not sure why any reasonable fan could have anymore hesitation at this point.

This is a nice step....but he has WAY more to prove in helping Moore build a winning franchise...we'll see if he continues this for years to come. I believe he is going to back moore and the royals from here on out.

Again, you think he's changed. I'm not entirely convinced, yet. Are things much, much better? Of course. There's no question, but this organization still has a ways to go. Let's tackle the ML payroll next and things will be looking pretty darn good, indeed.

As to your second point: Yes, GM's are responsible for making individual selections, but the owner must supply the necessary resources. This finally seems to be the case with Moore, but we really have no idea what kind of GM Baird was, for example. He was asked to make chicken salad again and again. So a good part of a GM's success is tied to resources, i.e. money, that the owner provides.

As a die hard royals fan i can understand why you'd be pessimistic, since we've been cheap for so long, but i have to believe Dayton would'nt stay here without full backing of our owner and commitement. Something tells me Glass's son was a big culprit on our cheap days as well and dayton said back the **** off

I fully hope this is the case. But when I hear Moore say things like, "Our attendance needs to be 2.5 mil for payroll to be around 75." I get very, very worried.

I wouldn't worry too much, part of his job is to get fans in the seats, but i think he is very dedicated to getting this franchise back on the winning track. I doubt he'd take a job just for the hell of it. In Dayton We Trust...we have been signing our 1st rounders and spending moola on them rather than being cheap. Last year we tried for FA's too....i bet we do the same again.
