Anyone know of a site that tells you optimal surround sound settings for recievers?

I have an old Yamaha HTR-5590 and my cousin comes over and tells me his SS sounds WAY better than mine when he's playing CoD4.

I've been tinkering with this system and wanted to know if it's something I can find online to take the guess work out.

Depends entirely upon your setup.

If you have matching speakers, it's often a good idea to set a pretty even range across the front (many companies will have a notation saying they are timbre matched).

It also depends on the size of your speakers, the placement of the sub and your own ear. It's not math, it's an art.

Most people like their fronts to pass down 80 or below, the satellites to pass down all below 120, and the Sub to pick up 80-100 or lower.

Experiment and see what you end up with.

I've got an Onkyo 606... Video upconversion could be better, but if your source is already in HD it really doesn't make a difference. I'm happy with it, right around $400.

See my post #11.
It has HDMI 1080P passthru and DCDi by Faroudja for other sources. I recommend it. It's well built, and better heatsinks than Onkyo, IMO.
