Matt McGuire's 2009 NFL Mock Draft
Round One Last update: Friday, Feb. 13, 2009. Next Update: TBA. WALT'S 2009 NFL MOCK DRAFT| MATT'S 2009 ROUND 2 Send Matt an e-mail here: [email protected] All other e-mail, including advertising and link proposals, send to: [email protected] 1. Detroit Lions: Matt Stafford, QB, Georgia New coaching regime in Detroit means a quarterback will likely be taken at this spot, barring what the Lions do in free agency. Check out my thoughts on the Lions options this offseason are at the quarterback position and the ripple effect it has on the rest of the NFL in my NFL Draft Blog. 2. Saint Louis Rams: Eugene Monroe, T, Virginia Eugene Monroe did not attend the Senior Bowl, but I think he is the left tackle the Rams will take at No. 2. Andre Smith's feet will get exposed on film as the draft process continues. A lot of people don't like Michael Oher for some reason and really dog on him. By default, I have to move Monroe up here to No. 2, and his talent is adequate to be taken at this pick. 3. Kansas City Chiefs: Mark "Vincent Chase" Sanchez, QB, USC If you want to read me really break down what Kansas City is most likely to do with the third overall pick, scroll down to the Feb. 10 entry in my NFL Draft Blog. 4. Seattle Seahawks: Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech I really did not want to go with the cliche draft pick here, but I had trouble giving the Seahawks a tackle. They have a lot of money tied up into Sean Locklear, and Walter Jones is under contract for another two years. Michael Crabtree might lose some value if he times an average 40 at the Combine, but Larry Fitzgerald ran a 4.63 and was still taken No. 3 overall in 2004. 5. Cleveland Browns: Everette Brown, DE/OLB, Florida State I keep rotating here between Everette Brown, Brian Orakpo, Malcolm Jenkins, Aaron Curry and Vontae Davis. I believe this is the pick range here at No. 5 overall. At this stage in the NFL Draft preseason, I think it is impossible to make a case as to why any of these players are a near lock. The Browns need linebacker help, especially after how poorly free agent Andra Davis played last year. Pick change; previously Malcolm Jenkins, CB 6. Cincinnati Bengals: B.J. Raji, DT, Boston College B.J. Raji absolutely blew up the Senior Bowl this week. No one could really block him. He showcased amazing athleticism and really competed. In the press conference interview, he really won me over and was very articulate. Who coached Raji at the Senior Bowl? None other than the Bengals coaching staff. A source told me in Mobile that the NFL general managers are saying Raji really worked his way into the top 10 like Sedrick Ellis last year. I know, Bengals fans, I did not give you a left tackle here, but Raji was the best player on the North team and the Bengals could still use a dominant three technique. 7. Oakland Raiders: Brian Orakpo, DE, Texas The Raiders really need a defensive end, and with Brian Orakpo on the board, he would be awfully hard to pass up on. He is going to be a Combine warrior and that is going to thrill Al Davis. Derrick Burgess only had 3.5 sacks last season, so the Raiders will be in the market for a defensive end, provided Davis doesn't break the bank for someone like Julius Peppers or Terrell Suggs. Actually, I think signing Ebenezer Ekuban is more accurate. He is 33 years old and coming off a season-ending injury... definitely Raiders material. Pick change; previously Jeremy Maclin, WR 8. Jacksonville Jaguars: Michael Oher, T, Mississippi While Eugene Monroe and Jason Smith were sitting on their butts, Michael Oher was out competing during Senior Bowl week. Oher could have dropped out too, but he didn't because he loves the game and is a competitor. Maybe he had some inconsistencies in pass protection, but for the most part, he was pretty solid. He is talented enough to be a No. 1 overall pick. I believe him when he told me he loves the game and wants to win. Actually participating this week sold me that he has a great attitude. Who coached him this week? The Jaguars. They also have issues at left tackle since Khalif Barnes had a terrible year. 9. Green Bay Packers: Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois If the Packers move Charles Woodson to safety full-time after doing it for the remainder of the 2008 season, then they will likely acquire a starting corner in free agency or the 2009 NFL Draft. Vontae Davis has elite physical tools, but there are some questions regarding his work ethic and attitude. He could still be the first corner off the board when it is all said and done. Pick change; previously Everette Brown, DE/OLB 10. San Francisco 49ers: Jason Smith, T, Baylor Joe Staley did not live up to expectations in 2008 so the 49ers could be looking for a left tackle at this pick. I love Jason Smith's athleticism and feet in pass protection, but he rarely run blocked at Baylor, so I have some concerns with his overall toughness. Is he that stereotypical undersized, athletic, finesse left tackle, a la D'Brickashaw Ferguson? I do not think Josh Freeman is worth the 10th pick here, so the 49ers take the best offensive lineman on the board. Pick change; previously Aaron Curry, LB 11. Buffalo Bills: Aaron Curry, OLB, Wake Forest Aaron Curry falls to the Bills as all fans rejoice with getting an elite or near-elite talent at 11. Then again, we all loved what the Bills did in the draft last year and they still underachieved. Aaron Curry would be a good fit with Buffalo because of his leadership, athleticism and play-making ability. Pick change; previously Brian Orakpo, DE 12. Denver Broncos: Aaron Maybin, DE/OLB, Penn State A slightly surprising pick here at 12 overall as the Broncos address their pass rush. Aaron Maybin has a very explosive first step, but questions remain. Is Maybin a one-year wonder? How much will he bulk up in the NFL, as he is only at 236 pounds? Can he shed blocks in the NFL? But we all have to remember how freakishly athletic Maybin is, and he will fit in great in the Broncos' 3-4 scheme on the outside. Pick change; previously Tyson Jackson, DE 13. Washington Redskins: Malcolm Jenkins, CB, Ohio State Carlos Rogers is a good young corner, but it remains to be seen if the Redskins will be able to afford DeAngelo Hall as a free agent. The Skins also need to get younger with Shawn Springs on the roster, so it makes all the sense in the world to go back to Ohio State and draft another talented corner at 13. Pick change; previously Andre Smith, T 14. New Orleans Saints: Chris Wells, RB, Ohio State When I mocked this up, I really love the creativity of this pick. The Saints are desperate for a powerful running back. Reggie Bush cannot carry the load. We know this. Pierre Thomas has durability concerns. Deuce McCallister will likely be released. This puts running back as a top need for the Saints. I know there are concerns at outside linebacker and cornerback, but teams do not always draft one of their top needs. Wells is a great fit for this offense and really fills a need as a mauling back with the speed to break big runs. Pick change; previously Brian Cushing, OLB 15. Houston Texans: Brian Cushing, OLB, USC The Texans recently cut Morlon Greenwood, so it looks like Xavier Adibi will be the starting weakside linebacker in 2009. DeMeco Ryans is at MIKE, but I still believe there is a hole on the strongside. Zach Diles just doesn't have the great athleticism I look for, and I think Cushing really brings a better ability to blitz and more effectiveness against the run. Pick change; previously Vontae Davis, CB 16. San Diego Chargers: Andre Smith, T, Alabama There was a major hole at right tackle once the Chargers determined Shane Olivea just was not the player he once was. Jeromey Clary did not step in and play on the level an NFL starter should. Andre Smith has All-Pro potential at right tackle, so this pick makes sense despite Knowshon Moreno and Rey Maualuga still being on the board. Pick change; previously Knowshon Moreno, RB 17. New York Jets: Josh Freeman, QB, Kansas State I really wanted to put Josh Freeman in the first round of my 2009 NFL Mock Draft, and I like the spot I have him at here. The Jets are moving to a new stadium, and the rumors I have read are that they are not selling all of the public seat licenses the organization anticipated. A new franchise quarterback would sell tickets, but he would also fill a need. Preseason MVP Brett Ratliff has potential, but I do not think the football club wants to put their trust in him. Freeman has mega-upside. With the "retirement" of Brett Favre, the Jets might be looking quarterback early. Pick change; previously Darius Butler, CB 18. Chicago Bears: Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU I know the Bears typically go with speed rushers, but I feel like Tyson Jackson brings a solid pass rush at left defensive end. He is very powerful and will be a beast against the run, but he still has the adequate quickness to get after the quarterback. Pick change; previously Rashad Johnson, S 19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia With Cadillac Williams getting injured once again and Warrick Dunn getting up in age, the Bucs might be looking running back at this pick. Knowshon Moreno brings some juice offensively, and I think Jeff Jagodzinski wants some speed on offense. This will probably end up being defensive line or Josh Freeman, but I just have Moreno in this mock. Moreno can do it all and he checks out at No. 2 on my Big Board. Pick change; previously Michael Johnson, DE 20. Detroit Lions: William Beatty, T, Connecticut When the Lions take Matt Stafford No. 1, they must follow up with their second pick as a left tackle. I do not think you should spend a top draft pick on a quarterback, then pass up on a franchise left tackle. It is important to protect your huge investment. Pick change; previously Jason Smith, T 21. Philadelphia Eagles: Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma State Can Andy Reid just come out and explain why he franchised L.J. Smith? I do not get it. Worst starting tight end in the league gets franchised... but only in Philadelphia. Brandon Pettigrew is a legit weapon and will make Donovan McNabb very happy before the fans run him out of town in 2009. Pick change; previously Chris Wells, RB 22. Minnesota Vikings: D.J. Moore, CB, Vanderbilt Cedric Griffin is an adequate starter, I do not deny this. What I also do not deny is that Griffin is not much of a play-maker. He is not a threat. He does not put fear in the hearts of quarterbacks or offensive coordinators. I think a ballhawk opposite Antoine Winfield could do so much for this defense. Turnovers are the key to winning games, and that is what Moore gets. I feel like it would certainly be a step in the right direction for this team in terms of retaining the NFC North crown. Pick change; previously Peria Jerry, DT 23. New England Patriots: Darius Butler, CB, Connecticut The Patriots are going to be looking for some lock-down press man corners this offseason, and based out of everything I heard in Mobile, Darius Butler is rising up draft boards. I am hearing Butler is an instinctive corner who has a great ability to jump routes and use his great closing speed. He is going to be a top-35 pick when it is all said and done. Pick change; previously Coye Francies, CB 24. Atlanta Falcons: Alex Mack, C, California I am not sold on Todd McClure. Atlanta fans who do not like this pick: I am sorry. Brian Cushing is off the board. Brandon Pettigrew is off the board. Alex Mack can be a line general at center and really anchor a unit. I love the offense with Roddy White, Sam Baker, Matt Ryan and a leader like Mack. We see what players like Kevin Mawae, Jeff Saturday and Shaun O'Hara have done for their offenses. This makes sense to me, but I am sorry if it is not what you want. Pick change; previously Brandon Pettigrew, TE 25. Miami Dolphins: Rey Maualuga, ILB, USC Channing Crowder probably will not be retained in free agency by the Dolphins, and this opens up a need at inside linebacker. Rey Maualuga is the prototypical 3-4 inside linebacker and will be liked by Tony Sparano and Bill Parcells. Pick change; previously Aaron Maybin, DE/OLB 26. Baltimore Ravens: Kenny Britt, WR, Rutgers To maximize Joe Flacco's value as a quarterback, the Ravens an elite possessional receiver. Kenny Britt has great size and is a dominant threat in the red zone. He will really put touchdowns on the board for Baltimore. If the Ravens were to go receiver, I think Britt would be the guy who fits their scheme. Darrius Heyward-Bey is a possibility too, but there are too many uncertainties with him. 27. Indianapolis Colts: Hakeem Nicks, WR, North Carolina Hakeem Nicks is the perfect fit for this Cols offense. He runs elite routes. He has the best pair of hands in the draft outside of Michael Crabtree. He can do damage after the catch. I believe he can start immediately for the Colts opposite Reggie Wayne with Anthony Gonzalez in the slot. We are getting into the later years of Peyton Manning's Hall of Fame career and you can only maximize his production by getting some great talent around him. Pick change; previously D.J. Moore, CB 28. Philadelphia Eagles: Eben Britton, T, Arizona The Eagles need more talent on their offensive line. Jon Runyan might not be back this year and William Tra Thomas is contemplating retirement. Eben Britton is the best offensive lineman left on the board. He is a no-brainer here at 28. Pick change; previously William Beatty, T 29. New York Giants: Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri The Giants might not trust Plaxico Burress anymore, and even if he comes back, they'll need a receiver opposite him. Jeremy Maclin has the speed to stretch the field, but huge questions remain with his route running. Pick change; previously Percy Harvin, WR 30. Tennessee Titans: Coye Francies, CB, San Jose State Nick Harper is 34-years-old and another starter is needed opposite Cortland Finnegan. I think the Titans are most likely to go corner or inside linebacker here. Jeff Fisher just doesn't draft receivers in the first round. Pick change; previously Rey Maualuga, ILB 31. Arizona Cardinals: Larry English, DE/OLB, Northern Illinois Travis LaBoy has not been durable in his career, and adding a pass-rushing threat to this defense could be a big help. Larry English reminds me a lot of Calvin Pace coming out of Wake Forest. English's skill set really fits this defense. 32. Pittsburgh Steelers: Rashad Johnson, S, Alabama The Steelers could be looking for a ballhawk on their defense, and I thorougly believe Rashad Johnson will be the first safety off the board when it is all said and done. Pick change; previously Alex Mack, C

Here's an e-mail response I got from Walter a few days ago regarding Stafford/Sanchez' place among past QB's. My original e-mail is at the bottom, his response is 1st.
It's not much, but should give some doubters around here some context of where these guys are thought of. FWIW, I sent the same e-mail to Scott Wright, and he said the same thing. Stafford, Ryan and Sanchez. ![]() |

Man, you were really stroking his ego, because I went dead in his shit and told him Thigpen will not be the starter when he had his NFL regular season mock draft up.

I think there's going to be some hard choices with our 2nd rd pick.
There will be some outstanding value, probably @ DE, DT, and WR. Which position do you predict will have the most value? My bet would probably be on WR, even though it may not be our biggest need. |

If I was an owner and my coach/GM drafted Josh Freeman in the first round then heads would rule. How ****ing stupid do you have to be to draft that guy early?
