End of story: Shanahan is not taking Chief's job

Shanahan is not taking Chief's job

KANSAS CITY - Mike Shanahan may not have a new job after all. After reports surfaced the former Denver Broncos head coach was close to taking the top job with the Kansas City Chiefs, those reporting that have backtracked.

ESPN now reports only that the Chiefs are targeting Shanahan for their head coaching job after the team fired Herm Edwards on Friday. Initially, ESPN reported that a deal was near between the Chiefs and Shanahan.

Edwards was fired after going 15-34 in three seasons. He still had one year left in his original four-year, $12 million contract.

The NFL Network's Adam Schefter, who recently finished writing a book with Shanahan, maintains Shanahan will not be taking the job with the Chiefs and is not considering it.

"They are not near a deal. They are not near a deal right now, they were not near a deal yesterday, they will not be near a deal tomorrow. Mike Shanahan will not be the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs," Schefter told 9NEWS. "All the people in Denver can stop worrying or stop talking about it, it's not happening. I know there have been national reports to the other effect. I'm here to tell you just the opposite, it's not going to happen."

Schefter says he has spoken with Shanahan directly about it.

"I speak to Mike regularly, there has been nothing in his tone or in his message that has given me any indication that he will be the coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. I know for a fact they've not had contact to this point. The Chiefs may in fact reach out to him in the coming days and even then I firmly believe it will not change anything," Schefter said.

The Broncos have hired new head coach and former New England Patriots offense coordinator Josh McDaniels to replace Shanahan.

When he was fired, Shanahan still had three years left on his contract, worth about $20 million.

So, this may be a dead horse and there is nothing to this whole Shanny rumor, but it seems pretty absurd that everyone just seemed to jump on this story, and Mort said he talked with multiple sources about the interest the Chiefs have / had.

Doesn't the fact that we have to interview a minority coach, and the extended time save face for all parties - including Schefter.

I know Adam and Shanny are friends and all, but there is NO WAY Mike's agent is going to confirm that they are hammering out serious contract details when any admission to that fact would screw the Chiefs and they'd get slapped with not following the Rooney rule. Not a great way to start off new employment.

Look at the Pioli hire... 1 blip of info about him interviewing, and then 1 Arrowhead Drive walled up and nobody had anything of real value in terms of information regarding our chances of hiring Scott. Clark wasn't tipping his hand, even before Pioli got here, and Pioli is a very smart and calculating guy based upon most people's accounts.

1. BB, Tuna and all that merry band of coaches all hold Shannahan in very high esteem. Shanny's respect amoung so many of his former buddies would hardly be dismissed.

2. Pioli, who some speculated favored hiring McDaniel as his HC if he ended up GM somewhere... Funny, he probably had a good idea he was going to go to KC before McDaniel took the Denver job, and you have to think knew about McDaniel going and could have stepped in if he really wanted to take him along with him as his head coach.

Did Pioli benefit from knowing a coach, who he didn't think would be available, would be available and decide to have a little chat to see if Shanny would be interested in being his HC if he should take a GM job somewhere..

All speculation, but think about it- Shanny was already fired and Pioli wasn't even the GM at this point, so there is no issue on talking hypotheticals.

Harlan stated on the radio that a source he talked with told him that Shannahan said that if he were to coach in 2009 the only guy he would work with as GM was Pioli.

Rather odd statement since: 1) if it was said before Pioli came to KC, there was no way he was going to NE as coach...

2.) if it was said after Pioli came to KC, that's a fairly open admission that he'd be interested in coaching the Chiefs, and putting it out there to float thru the backchannels since Herm was still coach.

It's funny that as soon as Herm gets canned, you heard this quick stir of Shanny buzz, and then quickly everyone got really foggy on the details.

Chiefs brass, Shanny, his agent all have a vested interest in killing the validity of the story. You don't want to get clipped for violating the Rooney rule, and the quickest way to kill any suspicion is to sit on the deal and let time pass. Interview a few coaches, blah blah blah...

I don't care whose reporting YAY or NAY. Shanny nor his agent are going to tell anyone they're negotiating with the Chiefs when that explicitly proves they're in violation of the Rooney rule. Notice his last quote is a bit of a softer stance. Nothing has happened- YET, but they could contact him in the future. NOT, the no way in hell ever stance he was taking before. Hell, Adam may even know differently, but knows he can't report otherwise and ruin his friendship. IDFK... ?

It could all just be for naught, but I just have a feeling that Pioli is too organized and methodical to let his dick hang in the wind, esp. regarding his HC, and when there's a coach available that pretty much all of his mentor's have expressed a high level of respect in his ability as a coach.

Everyone isn adjusting to a GM that is pretty mum. When he does talk with the media, he's pretty direct, like he was when addressing dismissing Herm. He's clearly not a guy that feels he needs to rush shit to appease anyone. Hell, he kept Herm around for quite a bit of time, when even Helen Keller could pick up the signals that his HC'ing days in KC were coming to an end.

I could be completely off, but something just feels very similar to the dead period from when we interviewed Pioli and the time he was finally hired.

Shanny is a terdburglar, no doubt, but he can run an offense, does a good job with HC'ing duties, groom a QB, and scout offensive talent fairly decently. When you have him and Pioli, who can really be an asset in an area that Shanny clearly is not strong at - scouting and FA acquisitions, that could be a nasty combo.

If you're Pioli, feeling confident that you can do your end of the job, why would you pass on taking a coach with 2 rings and has displayed the ability to add value to a team in all the areas you will require from a HC, and could benefit from your credited ability to eye talent for value.

OR,

He could not be coming..

Whose Philly's DB coach? Thought I heard Pioli has high praise for him, and that he could be a solid hire for D cordinator?

Also, word is that if Shanny takes a coaching job this year he said he would bring along his D corinator. I do not want him as ours, but there was nothing specified as to what coaching spot he would give him, but I'd like him as our DB's coach. Champ Bailey said something along the lines of the fact that he was the best DB's coach he's ever been around.

I hope Shanny doesn't come here. Any success would be met with comments like, "They did it with a Bronco retread", or "too bad they needed our HOF coach..." etc...

No thank you.

No thank you.

So, do Oakland fans say that to Donkey fans... since Mike was the Raider's old coach 1st.

Any success he would have in KC would just be salt in the wound for making a horrible call in firing him.

Yeah, but it would be said with pure hatred and spite, especially if we beat them in the playoffs. That's too good to pass up.

Shanahan wouldn't tell Adam if he was coming here. Pioli is keeping a very tight lock on the Chiefs, Shanahan isn't going to blow the trust by leaking out info before hes even hired.

The bottom line is no one knows what the hell is going on behind the Iron Curtain at 1 Arrowhead Drive. We all might as well buckle down and prepare for another agonizing wait (similar to the GM search and the wait on Herm's status).

At least we can be at peace with the fact Dictator Carl and Herm are gone.
