I think they all would like a long term contract but the guy gets a big payday this year and, if he plays well, he can get another next year.

Or he could suffer a career ending injury and not get as much money as he could have with a long term deal. He's going to get signed, it makes no sense to pay him 14 million for one year, not to either party.
