Former scout Tom Marino surprisingly doesn’t put a great deal of credence in the bench press when evaluating potential prospects, but is firm in his belief that both the vertical and long jump tell a far different story.

Wow, I’m impressed... a forty-five inch vertical jump! I thought only former basketball legends like Dr. J. or David Thompson could sky like that, but it appears the Buckeye’s other corner, Donald Washington, can also soar like an Eagle.

Athletes with fast twitch muscle fiber are a very desirable commodity in every sport and can tell a great deal about a potential prospects future successes at the professional level.

It is readily seen in an athlete's first-step quickness, explosiveness, and power; a wideout's take-off and ability to get in and out of a break; a corner's ability to turn and go or put his foot in the ground and break on the football.

Up to this juncture, we have ranked the top fifty in each category, but I’ve made an exception in this particular skill set and have recognized the top hundred at the position. You can take it to the bank that each of the thirty-two professional clubs that are currently meeting or will begin meeting on next week are also considering this to be a major factor when finalizing their draft board.

No doubt. If they're talking about explosiveness they should show the broadjump. That's a better indicator if you ask me, and that's one area where Barwin was outstanding.

Wouldn't it be easier to look at the tape and see how quickly these guys come out of breaks, jump on the ball, etc.?

If you know what you're doing, but they'd rather have a numerical value independently assigned.

This is one reason I don't like Orakpo though, I just don't see the quickness on the field that his vert would indicate he's capable of.

Yes, sometimes you will see him take baby steps because he isn't sure, or perhaps is playing more of a read assignment. But when he pins his ears back he's still not as fast(quick) as Brown.
