Q&A with TODD HALEY - 9/7

Q&A with TODD HALEY - 9/7

Sep 07, 2009, 2:20:23 PM
TODD HALEY: “Good afternoon. We had what we are calling today a bonus Wednesday (practice) – a chance to get a lot of extra work, or a lot of extra work in this case. I thought we had a little longer practice than we would normally have on a regular Wednesday. They had a couple of days off this weekend. Tomorrow will be a day of rest, too. It wasn’t all perfect but I thought it was a good day’s work with some good execution at times.”

Q: What’s the status of Matt Cassel and what is his status and what was he able to do today at practice?

HALEY: “He was out there as you guys saw. I think as the week goes on we’ll know a little bit more with Matt. It was good that he was out there and he was able to get through some things. As the week goes on a little further we’ll know a little more where he’s at.”

Q: Do you think there is a chance he will play this Sunday?

HALEY: “I think it was positive he was on the field.”

Q: Will how he feels tomorrow be important in any decision?

HALEY: “Anytime there is something wrong, how they respond to some work is important. Again, it’s good this is a long week and we’ve got the extra day. That will help with anybody that’s nicked up.”

Q: At what point does Matt need to practice in order to be able to play on Sunday?

HALEY: “I think that will be pretty much for everybody. You’ve got to practice to have a chance to play. This is a long week so it’s a little different, but I would say generally you need to have a full Friday practice in to have a chance.”

Q: Even though this is your first week as a head coach going into the season, do you view this week any differently than others? Is it a new mindset?

HALEY: “No, I think this is the same mindset I’ve been in at least since we’ve gotten back to training camp. Now, off-season is a little different but training camp and each game we were preparing for was, in my mind, equally important. Now, I know that sounds funny but I don’t feel a whole lot different. Maybe a few more butterflies, but as far as getting ready and preparing it’s a full time job.”

Q: Along those same lines, scheming for the regular season as opposed to scheming for pre-season, has to be somewhat exciting for you?

HALEY: “Yeah, this has all happened kind of fast for me. But it feels like football season, there’s no doubt about it. We were here late night the last few nights and it feels like football season.”

Q: One of the things this football team had trouble with was putting pressure on the quarterback. You’ve got quite a few sacks in four pre-season games, so how do you feel about that aspect of your team?

HALEY: “I’m encouraged defensively overall. At least coming out of the pre-season, a lot of guys were asked to do some different things they weren’t used to doing and I think most of those guys responded. We’ve had other guys step in who look like they’re going to help us.

“As I said after the game the other night, I’m encouraged with the defense. Now, it’s just going to be a matter of continuing to get better and being able to do the things that give you a chance to win. Our defense is going to have to play good football. I don’t think there’s any doubt about that.”

Q: Where is your defensive line right now? Are you happy with it?

HALEY: “Again, it’s a work in progress but there are some encouraging signs. Are they there yet? No, but that’s going to be up to them and pulling together and what they want to be viewed as. But through the pre-season and the amount the guys played together there was definite progress in a lot of different areas and, I think, there had to be progress. For us to have a chance to win games, that’s a group that’s going to have to play well.”

Q: You said this was still a team in flux. How do you feel about the 53 guys you have?

HALEY: “Right now, I think we have the right 53. I think there is no doubt in my mind but this will be something we continue to work on the entire year. The rules have it that there can be movement on the bottom end of the roster and I think we’ll take full advantage of that to have the right 53 out there. You will continue to see some movement from the Chiefs.”

Q: Have you decided who is going to be the kick returner?

HALEY: “There is still some competition mainly because now we’ve got to go with who’s going to be in the game. Now, we have some options which are good. If that’s one of their limited jobs they’re going to have to be pretty good to get on the game-day roster. If they’re not then we’ll have other options.”

Q: Do you know much about this new offensive lineman or was that more a Scott Pioli move?

HALEY: “Anybody that we bring in here we do a lot of tape-work on. So, guys that have been around him are going to have a little more familiarity. But anybody that we’ve brought in here I’ve put in my time looking at him. Most everything we do is together trying to get the right 53.”

Q: What does he do well and will he compete for a starting position?

HALEY: “I think he’s a guy with some experience, even though he hadn’t been a consistent starter. He has started games in the NFL. He’s got some experience under his belt; he’s a big man who I think has been around a team that’s won some games and that’s always good. He’s got some athletic ability, so he’ll be in the mix.”

Q: Who is your starting right tackle?

HALEY: “Right now it’s listed as Ikechuku Ndukwe.”

Q: Look at Baltimore and that challenge?

HALEY: “It’ll be a great challenge, no doubt about it. That team year-in and year-out is one of the best defenses, if not the best defense. They’ve got a couple of the great defensive players in the league. The challenge will be great and at Baltimore where it’s a tough place to play. I’ve been there on the road a bunch over the last few years. The fans make it tough and the defense makes it tough. Their offense looks like it has a chance to be a very good offense. It will be a great challenge for us.”

Q: Larry Johnson looks like he has had a pretty good pre-season. Are you pretty pleased with the way he’s looked and the way the running game has shaped up?

HALEY: “If he runs the way he ran the other night I’ll be pleased. If our running backs do what they did the other night (vs. St. Louis) and have chunk runs like they did and we can roll up that kind of yardage that means the offensive line is doing something but it also means the backs are doing something. Those guys have shown progress much like the defense and have continued to get better. They probably are one of the strengths of our team. Now, on some of those long runs we need to finish them and score touchdowns. But overall, that’s a spot that has stepped up to the challenge.”

Right, both. And yet only one of the two is being criticized in the post.

Rome would have been built in 12 weeks if several people around here would have been around to draft the citizens.
