I was in work, preparing some raw early footage from "Shrek" that had been converted to IMAX format. I was supposed to be running it for some corporate bigwigs who were flying in to see it. I got a phone call from my part-timer, who said, "Hey, turn on the TV, a plane just hit the World Trade Center." I assumed he meant small single-engine plane in a mishap. I turned on the TV just in time to watch the live shot of the second plane hitting.

My now-wife, then-g/f, was living at home near Morristown, NJ. From the hill she drives down, over the tops of the trees she normally could see the tips of the WTC. Instead, she saw the thick black smoke. Her mom was flying down to D.C. for some government meeting, and they couldn't reach her for a while.

That night, I had plans to head to Boston to play cards. My parents told me not to, because no one knew yet what was going on or if there were more things to happen. I did anyway. Normally, at 5pm, driving into Boston is a total parking lot: that day, I was pretty much the only car on the road.

On the very hill where my wife used to be able to see the towers, there's now a memorial. It's a few large pieces of the building wreckage. I have pics in my home computer, I'll post them tomorrow when I'm back near it. I also have some pics from 9/11 that someone sent me, that were sent to her by someone she knew who worked next door to the towers; I'll post some of those, too.
