Official Michael Jordan appreciation thread!

I was born in 1985...

I was born in Illinois...my mother and father got divorced...I moved with my father to Lenexa, Kansas and my mom remained in Illinois...

Over the years I became a diehard Chiefs fan (Derrick Thomas) and a diehard Bulls fan (Michael Jordan)...

When I was 6 years old I remember (a first sports moment) watching a Chiefs game with my dad and seeing Derrick Thomas sack John Elway, cause a fumble, and recover it...my dad vividly remembers this because I was so excited and he remembers it as one of my first true sports fan moments...as a dad, that has to be special.

I also remember growing up idolizing Michael Jordan.

Wow. That's all I can say.

I remember 2nd grade...I was in 2nd grade...at Rising Star Elementary School in Lenexa, KS...when Michael Jordan retired for the first time...Michael Jordan was so BIG that an elementary school...IN KANSAS...aired his retirement...live...at school...I was so distraught...I cried...my teacher sent me home to my dad...Michael Jordan was my hero.

He comes back...1994...I call my mom...my hero is back...my 11th birthday hits and at my dads front porch awaits for me, on my birthday, may 11th...a Michael Jordan #45 jersey (his comeback jersey) from my mom on my birthday...

I watch as he struggles through round 1...they win...but there awaits the almighty Magic...he's isn't the same...so, despite the fine he receives...he comes out against the Magic in the playoffs wearing old trusty...#23...gets fined every game...

But whatever...he's Michael Jordan.

This series marks the only time Mr. Dependable lets down a kid who envies him more than his own father...Nick Anderson strips him from behind in game 6 to seal the series for the Magic...my God lets me down...I'm devastated.

And that right there is the legacy of Michael Jordan.

No other athlete could do that...no one has ever thought about that...

When it was all said and done...when a game was one the line...when a series was on the line...Michael Jordan never let you down...

He was AMAZING...unbelievable...we will NEVER again see something like that...

As a child, he was my hero.

Why?

Simple.

When I expected him to do something, when the weight of the world was on his shoulders...he came through. No matter what...Michael Jordan was bigger than life.

No one else, regardless of talent, will ever be Michael Jordan.

Not LeBron, not Kobe...

Michael deserves every single bit of attention he receives this weekend...because he single-handedly motivated and inspired MY generation to be great...no matter what...MJ is who we look up to...he is our God...

well whatever...

there is a reason why MJ is considered the best basketball player of all time...

because he is.

you're just old school...you are for football, and for basketball...

no matter what, you'll always think 1970 was better than 2010.

Wilt was one of the greatest defenders in NBA history. He certainly wasn't just a scorer with the Lakers.

Whatever.

I'm pretty sure I've said here more than once that Joe Montana is the geatest QB ever, though I should amend that to say that I've ever seen.

I also believe that he is post '70.

But the point is, you can't dismiss other's opinions, opinion formed in many cases by people who've seen "Old school" as reeruned.

Go ahead and state your opinion that MJ is the best ever.

It's a popular opinion and one that can be argued.

But don't be a dumbass.

Jordan rules? Not at Hall induction

Who would have thought? Who could have anticipated?

Isn't this specifically why the Basketball Hall of Fame requires a player be retired for five years before induction, so the bitterness and the arrogance subside?

Michael Jordan did nothing to advance his legend in Springfield, Mass., on Friday night. He was petty, condescending, boorish in his acceptance speech.

He chided, amid his still-running feud with former Bulls General Manager Jerry Krause, how there might not be an "I" in "team" but how there is one in "win." Yet the focus of his speech was a singular look-at-me theme. Me. Me. Me.

Earlier in the day, during an informal session with the other 2009 inductees, Jordan noted, "Take away that little round ball, and we all would have struggled in life."

Yet to listen to fellow inductees David Robinson, John Stockton, C. Vivian Stringer and Jerry Sloan, it is quite clear they would not have struggled. They would have thrived because of family, faith, focus.

None of the others arrived with eye candy (at left) at their side. Only with appreciation for where the game had delivered them.

At times during Jordan's speech, you almost felt like looking away, tuning out.

This was not a defining moment, although the sycophants surely would tell the icon otherwise.

Oh, there were moments of candor and clarity during Jordan's day, particularly when addressing Heat President Pat Riley.

"You challenged me every time I played the Knicks and Heat," he said. "Any time I played against you, you had your Jordan-stoppers on the team. You had John Starks, who I love. You even had my friend Charles Oakley telling me I can't go with you to dinner because Pat doesn't believe in fraternizing.

"Patrick Ewing, we had the same agent and came up at the same time, but we couldn't go to lunch. Why is this? You think I'm going to play against Patrick any different than I play against anybody else? No.

"Then you had your little guy on the staff who became the Knicks coach after you, Jeff Van Gundy. He said I conned players, I befriended them and then attacked them on the basketball court.

"I just happen to be a friendly guy."

Mostly, though, Jordan showed how the person never matched the player.

Friday night ultimately belonged to Robinson. His comments came from the heart, spoke of a greater good than shooting a small ball through a large hoop.

In a few, brief moments, The Admiral lifted his legend. The same could not be said about perhaps the game's ultimate legend.

The best entrance ever for the best team ever with the best player ever.

I got chills back in the day when I watched this and I get chills now when I watch it. This Bulls entrance is often imitated nowdays, but the electricity of it can never be duplicated.

I love Ray Clay's voice............"From Nooorth Carrroooolina..............."

And, for good measure, I must include the NBA on NBC intro. NBA on NBC - Greatest NBA telecast EVER! Suck it TNT, ESPN, and ABC. You can never match up to the greatness of Marv Albert and Bob Costas!
