Romeo Crennel

Since there is clearly nothing good to talk about and we're all thinking about "next year", I thought I'd waste some time and throw this out there. Romeo will be our DC next year.

When Gary Gibbs and Clancy Pendergast were hired, it wasn't clear who was going to be the DC for several days/weeks. Ultimately the nod went to Clancy, but most of us were speculating that they were trying to get Romeo and that was why they didn't give either one the nod for a time. Romeo said he was going to "take the year off", but expects to be back in coaching next year.
My thought is that Haley and Pioli told Gibbs & Clancy that they wanted Romeo, but if he declined...the job was going to Clancy. Basically they gave Clancy the job to hold for a year and if he does well, he keeps the job. Doesn't look like that'll happen.

Romeo makes too much sense to not end up here. He clearly doesn't have what it takes to be a HC and he knows it, yet he did very well working with Pioli and both know what each other is looking for in personnel.

Pioli knows Haley has too much on his plate and needs to have someone capable of taking care of everything on defense. He needs to make it a non-issue for Haley so that he can focus on offense. He also knows that Haley will always be heavily involved with the offense, no matter how many assistants and consultants he has on that side of the ball...and he wants him to be.

Pioli brought Haley in here because of his offensive experience and wants his focus to be on that side of the ball. Romeo is given complete control on the defensive side of the ball and Haley takes the offense with the HC title.

I disagree.

While I think Haley was reluctant this year to hand over playcalling to an assistent, if he can find an OC who shares his philosophy, after this season of multiple responsibilities, I can easily see him handing off those responsibilities so he can more easily focus on the bigger picture.

That was actually something I brought up about a week ago, though I only suggested QB coach.

I just don't see him handing off the playcalling next season. Maybe, but I think he is more likely to find someone who can take care of the defense so he can stay just as involved in the offense, until it is where he wants it to be. He will want a version of himself in that role and I don't think he'll find that guy in an offseason. I think he's more likely to groom someone into that role like he was. He may hire a "coordinator" to help with game planning, but when the calls are sent in from the sideline, he'll be the one doing it. Think about the ego factor, I believe he knows/thinks that he is the best play caller in the game. Why hand that duty over to someone else?

Bill Parcells has a big ego also, but for all of that ego, he was a great delegator.

Haley is from that Parcells tree.

I can't think of any 34 defense he's been associated with.

In addition to that, I know he's mentioned it before, but Pioli brought up again in that WFAN interview how when Belichick went to NE he realized he couldn't micro-manage everything like he had in Cleveland. And it made him a better coach.

Surely that's been a topic of at least a conversation or two between he and Haley.
