Car Enthusiasts... My neighbor has a 1978 Corvette Indy Pace Car

With 368 miles on it. It's stored in a controlled environment and he says it's worth about $40K. I've always loved Corvettes, but are the Pace cars sold at a premium? He took it to the KC Corvette Club a couple of years ago and won "Best in Show" hands down.

What is something like this really worth? BTW, he moved in next door less than a year ago and I just found out about this today. And yes, he's an honest dude.

I didn't know the exact years but I know some of those old vettes aren't worth much. My brother has a '60 'vette. I wonder what it is worth?

Probably a lot, the worthless ones are 73-83. Pretty much anything '72 or older is sought after.

If you can find an 83 vette, I suggest you buy it. Those things are pretty rare.

He's also got a '57 Nomad, a '57 Bel Air, a '66 Chevelle and a '64 Corvair Convertible. I'd like to know what his collection is worth.

It was '83, the C4 wasn't ready until halfway through the model year so they just sold them as '84s.

The sign on the exhibit explains: "The planned 1983 Corvette brought forward some of the most far reaching design changes in Corvette's history. Many changes included high-technology that had not been proven for automobile application....Although the technology was available, it had to be developed into the manufacturing process with the quality, reliability, and durability proven before production of saleable vehicles could begin. The initial plan called for introduction of the newly designed 1983 in October 1982. There were 43 pre-production models built (but) a decision was made to withhold production (for sale) until January 1983 and to serialize them as 1984 models.

So, why were they held off until January? Before production lines began, California voted to make emission controls more stringent than ever, and the 1983 model wasn't prepared to deal with it.
