I think any reaching out to new talent is a good thing and shows somebody in the studios is paying attention, but really that's a producer who got a deal. He may bring on the same talent who worked for him for free, but he may not, and he may not be allowed to if the studio has their own ideas.

I wish him luck dealing with the other 7 producers they will saddle him with, and all of their constant notes. The short is an example of what can be done technically if you cut out the bullshit, but dealing with a feature length story is another ballgame.

This may be the first youtube clip to get somebody a deal, but it certainly isn't unusual to make a short to get noticed. Sometimes it's a good thing, sometimes not. 9 has an interesting visual, but a really blah story, and full of plot holes, might have made a masterpiece as a short.

Again, all good to look out for new talent, but the creatives on this one didn't get the deal, and while the vfx are pretty good, that was not made on a home computer. I do give the producer points for having a good sense of Hollywood math already. 300 dollars, my ass.

Because first off, it looks like the Red in terms of quality and secondly, it's becoming the first choice of many producers and directors because of the cost and quality.

I'd guess these guys just rented the gear for a day or two. Everything else was done in Post.

I wonder if the DSLR crossovers like the Mark V will bite into Red's demographic. Can't help but think they're going to lose some.

Maybe but you have to buy the mount, etc. for it.

It's reasonably priced but so many people are already using the Red that it's probably going to be a difficult climb.

Once you've bought gear, you're often locked. This is largely what has kept the whole industry from moving forward as much as it could. And who can blame them, we all want to maximize profits, yes?

The shifts frequently come from those just getting in. This is how RED skyrocketed into use. A fraction of the cost compared to the old standbys. This is probably how the next RED, whoever that is, will gain it's foothold. Cheaper, Better, etc.

Well, the Panavision cameras can't be bought. They can only be rented/leased. They've had a stranglehold on the industry for nearly a century.

Well, yes and no. There are plenty of films being shot by accomplished directors on the RED camera and have been from the beginning. It's more of a cost factor plus the fact you can watch the dailies instantaneously.
