True Mexican food is far more complicated, whether it's Oaxacan or Baja or from Mexico City.

Mole's and guacamole and fish tacos and mariscos are far more interesting than refried beans, cheddar cheese and "spicy " hamburger.
Preach.

I like tex mex, and generally I can enjoy a meal at even average places. The one exception was this absurdly bad place in River Falls during training camp. Brutally bad. But I like places like On The Border, Chuy's, even pretty meh places like Cielito Lindo's in Springfield, MO.

However, I never feel a huge draw to go eat it when I want to eat out. If a bunch of yahoos who don't know any better want to go, I'll go, but I'd rather go to a nice Indian, Mediterranean or Ethiopian place any day. I'd rather hit up a chinese place, or a decent steakhouse like Saltgrass. I'd rather go to a pizza place, or a good burger place (not McDonalds). I love Spanish food, which is completely different and far superior to Tex-Mex (Madrid Meatballs FTW). I've never had REAL mexican food.

Basically, Tex Mex is fine, but I'm not running to get to it like I am other restaurants. Right now I'm craving indian buffet and I'm going to scarf some down on Sunday.

I prefer the lighter Mexican food you can get in California, and TJ. That heavy shit doesn't sit well in my stomach, but I do like it occasionally.

I ate a fish taco in San Diego that was maybe the closest I'll ever get to heaven.

Oaxaca cheese is very bland. It's white and stringy with little flavor. It's kind of like fresh mozzarella, which needs alot of help.

If you can't find a really good authentic Mexican restaurant in KC you haven't been to Argentine. Of course, it's on the KS side, so that deters the MO bitches.

I wasn't referring specifically to Oaxacan cheese but Oaxacan cuisine, which has a style and flavor of its own.

Correct. On The Border is terrible. But, you need to try Jose Peppers outside of Lee's Summit. For some reason, the LS location is vastly inferior to others. Drive out to Olathe to their Jose Peppers. That's the best one.

Last time I was in town, I ate at the 75th and Midland location and it was awful.

It's a bummer because I'm friends with the original owners and had several friends work there in the 80's (including my brother and sister in law).

It just seems like the quality has dropped substantially. Either that or I remember it being much better and my memory doesn't match reality.

I know. But basing your opinion on Tex-Mex in KC on Jose Peppers? Just take a chance and drive through Argentine when you're here next time. There are some awesome little authentic Mexican restaurants that are never on anyone's radar.

No, I'm basing my Tex-Mex on 27 years of living in the KC area as well as Tex-Mex in Texas.

With all due respect, when I visit KC, we go for BBQ & steakhouses, two things that absolutely suck in SoCal.

I can get Mexican food anywhere, anytime and everywhere out here.

And you should eat BBQ in KC, but don't discount the Mexican food. I love going down to the little dives that serve awesome Mexican. We have a lovely gal at work that brings in homemade tamales twice a month to help her church. You won't find anything better. It's not the where, it's the who.
