James Harrison says Kyle "Pro Bowl" Orton "got what he had coming"

Posted by Mike Florio on August 30, 2010 1:04 PM ET

When a bank robber gets away with the money, the last thing he should do is call the bank the next day, identify himself, and say, "You're damn right I took the money."

A similar concept applies when a football player apparently gets away with a fairly blatant case of unnecessary roughness.

After recovering a fumble, which eventually was ruled not a fumble, in Sunday night's game between the Steelers and the Broncos, linebacker James Harrison encountered Broncos quarterback Kyle "Pro Bowl" Orton. Orton, not cognizant of the line between bravery and lunacy, tried to tackle Harrison. So Harrison unloaded on Orton. Hard.

"He was running his mouth and getting in the way of the train," Harrison said after the game, per Mike Klis of the Denver Post. "And the train wasn't coming off the track."

If Harrison had said nothing more, we think he'd be fine. It was a rough play, but no one told Orton to get in the way of the train. But then Harrison added a sentence or two that creates the impression that he was trying to injure Orton.

"He was popping off down there the first time they were about to score," Harrison said. "So you run your mouth, expect to get something. Everything's between the lines, so he got what he had coming."

Even though Orton wasn't throwing the ball or otherwise within the protections that apply to quarterbacks, the rules prevent specific instances of unnecessary roughness. Despite the fact that no flag was thrown, Harrison's word could be enough to trigger a letter from the league office informing him that he's getting what he has coming, as in money coming out of his check

Agreed - especially in preseason, if you're a starting QB ... you don't make that type of contact. And, the only reason that Harrison would be walking a fine line is because he said Orton essentially disrespected him earlier, he didn't like it and that hit is what he had coming to him.

So, you could easily read that he was intending to do something to Orton the whole time and he was just waiting for his opportunity. Again - I don't think it was a bad hit, but players just need to watch what they say and how they say it.

Well I doubt Harrison will care if they do fine him.I have to believe as a defender,if he really felt "disrespected" then the $$$ was well spent in his opinion.I just wish they'd go ahead and make the rule where the QB is off limits all together and we can move on.It's probably right around the corner anyway.

well at first I was fine with it and thought orton was an idiot for attempting the tackle (which I still think was stupid). But when I saw the replay, you see Orton go to the ground to take out Harrison's feet, then Harrison dives to the ground and basically goes out of the way to hit orton with his shoulder. If orton makes the tackle the way he did he should've only got hit by harrison's legs below the knees. He was on the ground and got hit with harrison's shoulder.

Ok.I see exactly what you are saying, but Harrison lowered his shoulder just like a RB (offensive player) with the ball and plowed Orton into the ground. If they make that a dirty/illegal hit,you may as well quit running the football all together.

Yeah, I saw the hit and thought "Damn, he was intentionally trying to lay a hard hit"... but, it's football. If you don't want to get hit (esp preseason), don't put yourself in that position.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Harrison embellished on what was really required there. Like you said, not illegal, but likely dirty.

That said, Orton needs to learn that diving with your back to the oncoming ball carrier is not an effective means of making a tackle.

No, man. Orton was already on the ground when harrison dove into him. If orton wasn't there and harrison did that move he would have just dove onto the ground. He didn't just lower his shoulder, but I'm not really complaining since orton's dumbass shouldn't have been there in the first place. But the hit was still dirty.

It's a dirty hit because its preseason. If it's the regular season it's gravey on a fumble recovery. Of course none of it should have happened because it was clearly incomplete in real time.
