Bill Hicks, George Carlin, Mitch Hedberg, Pryor & other funny ones who've passed on.

I love Bill Hicks. He is my favorite all time comedian. Carlin, Pryor and Hedberg are up there, as well.

All of the good ones, are dead, it seems... yet Carlos Mencia and Dane Cook are perfectly healthy.

Here is a set by Bill Hicks that David Letterman banned from his show about 16 years ago. I'd never seen this set until moments ago. Solid stuff.

Feel free to post some of the funniest bits from your favorite comedians that are no longer with us. We could all use a laugh, right?

I share a lot of beliefs and ideals with Carlin.

Ironic that after this was aired, Carlin died.

I thought Tosh's "Completely Serious" was good. I'm a big fan of Dave Chappelle, wish he'd come back.

Pryor made me laugh like nobody else, and Redd Foxx was brilliant. Another guy you should all check out is Paul Mooney, he wrote alot of material for Pryor.

My problem with Hicks was never his politics. It's that he was so damn dark. I understand that you have a message and I am well aware that it's not a perfect world - but I have a hard time with comedians that take everything so seriously and are so prone to going into some pretty sinister places.

I don't think he'd have been Jon Stewart. I see him becoming more like Bill Maher. Maher was funny at one point in his career, but now he's just kind of a bloviating shithead that takes himself entirely too seriously.
Bill was dark, no doubt. I think if you really give a listen to his larger body of work, though, you will see his message is largely optimistic.

Redd Foxx
Charlie Callas
Alan King
Henny Youngman
Jack Benny
Lenny Bruce
Flip Wilson
Buddy Hackett
Bob Hope

And don't forget impressionists like David Frye and Frank Gorshin.

I think Larry Reeb "Uncle Larry" is funny, but he's not dead yet.

There's some people who are "actors" now who used to be stand ups beside Eddie Murphy. Guys like Steve Martin, Albert Brooks and Kevin Pollack.

Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock are tweeners. They're still both doing stand up, but also do acting gigs.

Guys like Leno, Letterman, Craig Ferguson, Jimmy Fallon and Jon Steward are kind of in their own odd "TV front man" category, but all have been stand ups at one time.
That's a really good list.

What most probably don't know is that Andy Griffith also started out as a stand up, and his "What it was, was football" set was one of the funniest things I've ever heard.

And Rich Little is still, to me, the best and funniest impressionist to have ever hit the stage.
