BACKGROUND: The Chiefs flirted with the idea of adding Shaun Rogers last off-season, and reportedly made an offer to the veteran defensive tackle, but he ended up signing a one-year deal with the Saints.

After appearing in three Pro Bowls with the Lions and Browns, Rogers’ first season in New Orleans was underwhelming. He primarily played a reserve role for the Saints and finished the year with a just 22 tackles and no quarterback sacks. It was the first time in Rogers’ 11-year year NFL career that he finished a season without a sack.

But even though Rogers’ numbers were down in 2011, he was still a steady player against the run and seemed to progress with his new team as the season moved forward.

Rogers was last a regular starter in 2009 with the Browns, but hasn’t opened all 16 games of a season since turning in a Pro Bowl campaign working with Romeo Crennel in 2008. The Browns dealt CB Leigh Bodden to the Lions along with a third-round pick to acquire Rogers before Crennel’s final season as head coach.

Originally a second-round pick of the Lions in 2001, Rogers has tallied 505 career tackles and 37.5 sacks. He was an AP All-Pro in 2004.

AVAILABILITY: Rogers is set to hit unrestricted free agency in March, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Saints signed him to another one-year deal. New Orleans also has a decision to make with fellow veteran defensive tackle Aubrayo Franklin, who signed a one-year contract with the team last off-season as well.

COACHING CONNECTIONS: In addition to his Pro Bowl season working with Crennel, Rogers has crossed paths with Chiefs offensive coordinator Brian Daboll (Browns, 2009-10) and assistant head coach Maurice Carthon (Lions, 2002).

Rogers was also a teammate of Chiefs defensive quality control coach Otis Smith with the Lions in 2003.

During his free agent visit with the Chiefs last February, Rogers tweeted that he had dinner with Crennel and defensive line coach Anthony Pleasant.

WHY HE FITS: Rogers’ fit might depend on how the Chiefs view 2011 sixth-round pick Jerrell Powe. If Powe is ready to join the defensive, a veteran like Rogers could be a good match for a younger player whose role is beginning to evolve.

The Chiefs have an obvious need at nose tackle with an unproven Powe and practice squad player Anthony Toribio as the only two tackles under contract. Kelly Gregg is scheduled to hit unrestricted free agency and there have been recent rumblings he might retire.

Kansas City was obviously interested in Rogers last year. Maybe the interest is still there.

Given the poor selection of 2 gap DTs in the draft, I could live with Rogers or Franklin, especially if used in a rotation with Powe in an effort to get him ready to be the man.

But I'd much rather have Soliai. The above scenario assumes a lot about Powe.

i was all for getting Rogers in the draft(detroit trading ahead of us) and i was even ok with picking him up after his 1st contract was up.

now, not so much.

No thanks. He would be another 1 year stopgap for the position.

I'd rather pay for Soliai or a younger guy that will play longer than a year.

First of all there are several free agent nose tackles that would be preferred to Shaun Rogers, including Paul Soliai, Sione Pouha, Sammie Lee Hill (RFA), and Antonio Garay. That being said, Shaun Rogers could still be a good signing. Rogers is a powerful man that can anchor the line of scrimmage. Romeo Crennel saw Shaun have his best year in 2008 with 76 tackles, 4.5 sacks, 4 passes knocked down, in 16 games. If the Chiefs could sign Rogers to a very club friendly contract and allow Romeo Crennel to motivate and get the most out of Shaun, it would be good.

Shaun Rogers would be the poor man's choice. I don't think a team with as much cap space as we have need to go that route.
