You do the trade because prospects are just that, prospects. You had other young prospects who you hoped would be producing NOW (they aren't), so you go out and get an ace to win in 1-2 years. I don't see how anyone can't see prospects as anything more than a gamble and a huge gamble at that. Look at the "can't miss prospects" who have bombed or at least not lived up to the hype. If Myers becomes a stud in 4 years, who knows what the rest of you roster will be like by that time. We are small market, we can't just bring in players fill out a roster every year. And if Myers turns into a stud, the percentages that he would be average or bust were much higher....see 2013 KC Royals.

And as of now, you surely can't evaluate that trade. Shields is pitching lights out. Myers in this lineup right now wouldn't mean shit to us winning and it wouldn't mean shit to us winning next year either.

Yes I agree. I, though a Sox fan, was on the fence with the trade because your other prospects aren't producing. On the other hand, you make the trade because you get a borderline ace. I just wasn't keen on trading Myers for a pitcher you have control of for only 2 years.

You didn't know our current prospects wouldn't be producing at the time of the trade. You can't analyze it that way.

And having control over pitchers for long periods of time is usually a poor strategy in today's baseball, apart from the few and far between young aces.

When you say Prospects do you mean Hosmer and Moustakas ? If so why cant you analyze it?

2012 Hosmer .232 Avg .304 OBP .359SLG 14HR 60 RBI 124 Hits 152 games played.

2012 Moustakas .242Avg .296 OBP .412 SLG 20HR 73 RBI 136 Hits 149 Games played

That's not gonna cut it in the AL for a 1st and 3rd baseman. Your GM had to know you needed O at the time of trade.

I would add that locking up frontline starters isn't something we can afford even if we wanted to. It's a big reason Tampa even traded him in the first place, and will likely trade Price
