Who would you start for the wild card game. Shields, Duffy, or Ventura.

A couple days ago there was "no way this team makes the playoffs."
Today it's that they're going to lose the WC for sure. I'm pretty sure some of you people get no joy out of life. I am not a fan of the current WC play in game, but baseball is a strange game. They just need to get in. |

I get the point... it makes it more difficult for the wild card. And I really like making a division title important. But you play 162, and then one game, blam, you're done.

I love the 1 and done with the WC spot. You didnt win the division, well you can scrap it out with another team for 1 game to see who gets the rights to face the best record in the league!
Its how it should always have been. |

It has got to be Shields. It can't be anyone other than Shields. Everyone knows it has to be Shields. We traded Wil freaking Myers for him. (not the Wil Myers of today, but the promise of what Wil Myers might be someday, 2 years ago)

Agreed. The creation of the 2nd wild card is the 2nd-most important thing that has happened to the sport since I seriously began following the game as a fan. (the most important was serious revenue sharing. Don't laugh, its for real, small market teams don't have an excuse not to compete at least once every few years anymore.)

Agreed. The wild card is still a new enough concept that they can do this, and I think it's great for the game. The emphasis has always been win your division, and originally win the pennant. So adding 1 more team and letting them have a play in game adds game 7 type excitement, and also gives the team with the best record in the league the advantage of not having to face a team's ace in game 1. I really like the excitement, and the emphasis on winning behind the move. It's fresh, and original thinking. Baseball needs that.

I'll take the 5th playoff spot in exchange for the guaranteed best of 5 that the wild card used to enjoy.

I get the idea. I'm probably one of about three people on earth who thinks a 7-9 NFL division winner should get a home game over a 12-4 wild card team. It's just tough with baseball though because it's such a long season, and anything can happen in a single game.
It's not really going to happen this year, but the wild card was a nice way to reward a team that won 95 games but didn't win the division. I don't think they'd ever go to a 3 game WC series but it'd probably be more fair. |

Unfortunately, extending the wild card "series" beyond one game would negatively impact the LDS, so the wild card teams must battle it out in an elimination game. Its probably good for ratings too, and its a nice way to reward the division winner. A few years ago, the Yankees (who locked up a wild card) actually decided that winning the AL East wasn't worth going all-out for, which is just unacceptable.
