Greg Holland wins first Mariano Rivera Award

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Back in April, Major League Baseball announced that a new award would be handed out on an annual basis to the best relief pitcher in each league. The AL version of the award is now known as the Mariano Rivera Award, and the first winner of it is Royals closer Greg Holland.

The announcement was made by commissioner-to-be Rob Manfred before Game 2 of the 2014 World Series, with Craig Kimbrel winning the NL version, the Trevor Hoffman Award.

"This is a very humbling experience," said Holland. "You kinda get iffy any time your name is put on a plaque with these two guys [Rivera and Trevor Hoffman]."

Holland, 28, closed down 46 of his 48 save chances for the Royals with a 1.44 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 90 strikeouts in 62 1/3 innings this season. For the second straight time, he was named an All-Star.

Anyone think there's any chance we lose Holland this offseason and move Davis to closer? I don't know what's up with our payroll or any of that...

Also, does anyone know the future plans for Finnegan? Is there any shot of him being a starter at any point?

He'll be in AA or AAA and probably be our 6th or 7th starter next year (injury insurance) at least for the first few months before a potential big league call up. I was all for trading Holland since he'll make about $9M after arbitration next year, but I'm officially off that boat. Clearly, an all time great bullpen is the deadliest postseason weapon you can have in today's game, so let's bring back the band. Glass should ok a payroll around $105M, I'd bet.

So you think Shields will be here? I think we let Big Game walk and put Finnegan in his place-makes more sense-a higher ceiling and not much of a drop off-if any.

I agree that Shields is gone. Someone like the Cubs will offer him a canoe full of cash and pussy. Fine. But Finnegan has been so damn good. He's the player I'm almost most excited about on the roster.

Once they have him geared up from the Minors to be a starter, he'll be in KC. I'm HOPING May/June, but thinking July
