Vacuum Sealers

I know the Sous Vide guys use them, anybody else here use them? I have some questions about them.

I would be looking to use them for mostly meat, both raw and prepared, probably look at some produce options, and maybe down the road Sous Vide.

What does it cost for bags and supplies? Is it cost effective to bag/freeze for ~1 month?

What kind of things do I need to look for for hardware? I'm a pretty n00bish with this stuff.

I was looking at this one. Link

I tried to use one when we put up sweet corn and it sucked a bunch of juice out of the bags and into the machine? Is this a common problem or was there something I was doing wrong?

Advice would be appreciated. TIA.

We got one as a wedding gift. We tried using it once. It went straight back in the cabinet and it hasn't moved for 16 years.

I have run at least 60 of them and have had ZERO issues, they have worked fantastic.

They just wouldn't work on either of my two sealers, so I sent that shit back. Wasting 1/2 the product just isn't worth it to save a few bucks. Went back to brand bags, haven't had a failed one yet.

And with thicker bags, you don't have problems with bone-in meats.

I used the zip lock brand and they don't keep for shit. Always getting leaks with those. Never get leaks when I buy the food saver. Also my vacuum sealer is food saver brand.

I wouldn't go cheap on bags. Especially if you plan on sous vide.

Can you wrap in foil or butcher paper then vacuum seal? I have never used one of these just by freezer bags by Glad.

As long as you put it in a bag, I guess it would be ok, but not sure why you'd do that

I just bought this one. Pricey but appears to be very good quality. I don't like to go cheap on things like this, hopefully it ends up being worth the investment.

I scored a NIB FoodSaver for $20 in the clearance section at WM. My greatest find for stuff I actually use.
