Earth bag homes

Anyone ever done anything like this? I've been looking at small alternatives I could comfortably stay in/around for a couple of days, and with current lumber prices, this is certainly more economical. It doesn't seem all that difficult--just extremely labor intensive.

I'm just looking for something I can stay in while I rent the house for the weekend. I lived in my house for 2 months without electricity, so I'm not too spoiled.

No, but with a little stretch of your imagination, a new home costing about $250K in the midwest can be built for about $150K using the method I outlined. For those who want to live in a hole in the ground, carry on.

That's exactly how I got interested, I was sitting in the break room at work and someone mentioned they were building their own home and how much they were going to save. I had no idea that you didn't need a contractor's license or could even get a bank loan. By someone talking about it and I inquired and a brief understanding of what was necessary, I took it from there.

How long can these things stay standing? Longevity?

It’s very interesting.

Yes, Bob Dole actually wants to live in a hole in the ground. No joke. He's his own man.

I would move a utility shed in. Insulate, throw a black water tank under it; mini split for heat and air.

The hole in the ground is going to need all the same plumbing and electrical anyway, and a shed will be a LOT easier to install it in.

Hell, plumb the shed like a camper and all you’ll need is a garden hose and electrical line. If you want to get really simple you can run several extension cords that are on separate circuits.
