Top Gun: Maverick

Top Gun 2 is out and in theaters and is quite popular at the box office. I havent been to an actual movie at an actual cinema since even a few years before COVID, but this one is the one that has me making plans for a return.

I've not yet seen it. But surely many of you have? A thread must be made!

I listened to a Critical Drinker podcast about this movie and jotted down some quotes:

Guest: "Lunatics just seemed to fade away into the background and this movie has made 1.2 billion so far. I feel like adults are back in charge."

Drinker: "I loved it and I came out of the theatre feeling great and I want all people to experience that first of all, because I think it will be good for...people's outlook on life"

Drinker: "It's this classic idea of the hero you used to love, he's back, he's older but he's still vital, he's still interesting and still capable of doing stuff. He doesnt have to be deconstructed, doesnt have to go through a postmodernist nightmare. That can still work! Thats what people want!"

Proper link to all that when I get to my desktop. But this film sounds great and I intend to see it ASAP. Anyone already see it? Thoughts?

Lol, no, just a freight dog. Met Duke Cunningham and Pete Driscoll once though.

As a kid I was obsessed with military aircraft, fighters in particular, and by the time I was in my early teens I was reading everything I could get my hands on concerning both Red Flag and Top Gun. My dad bought me a military aviation encyclopedia set that I read front to back several times.

I remember that game so well when I was about 10 years old.

my father, who had a pilot's license and flew on helicopters in vietnam was watching me struggle with that landing and said "give me that damn thing" and landed it on his 2nd or 3rd try lol. It was the only time he ever played a video game in his life.

There was some trick to it I can’t completely remember. May have just been that if you need to be around the speed and altitude targets but ignore the flashing directions.

It wasn't for a lack of trying, but with no internet, no ability to look up how to do it besides maybe a Nintendo Power magazine you didn't know existed, or your mom not letting you buy it, was ****ing infuriating.

I never understood how people struggled with that.

Now if anyone wants to bitch about the sled level on Battletoads, I'll listen. **** me running that level was hard.

But landing in Top Gun wasn't that tough.

Yeah, I put the curser at the end of the runway and ignore the instructions it gives you. Aim at them middle and act like you're gonna come down on the center of the deck. You have arrestor hooks for a reason; you don't need to plant it on the first wire.

I don't remember how my speed figures but I know I just mashed the brake button until I hit a certain MPH and then just let it coast the rest of the way.

Just took a little trial and error and then it was pretty simple.
