Billiards

Any pool players on the planet? I just started back up with APA after a 21 year break. If you play what equipment do you rock. I have a 2000 Viking that I play with. I’m thinking about getting a carbon fiber.

Grew up with a billiard table in the basement. Some days I was pretty good and other days I sucked. I don't think a i cared enough to stay focused. I had a buddy who really liked to play and would play at the pool hall and some tournaments. He was always wanting to play pool in the basement and I would be like "dude there are no chicks in the basement so let's get out of here." We were out one night and as we returned to my house he wanted to shoot a game. We put $2.00 on it. I picked up a broom and flipped it around to use as a cue. I ran the table, tossed the broom on the table and picked up my $2.00. I told him that was the last time I'll ever play you at pool. Beat his ass with a broom handle

My all-time favorite cue was a Meucci DH-1, and a Meucci HP-3. Played some really good pool with those two sticks.

I've played with CF shafts, and they are pretty nice in certain respects, but I'm not sure they do much for beginner-average players. If you understand the mechanics/physics of the game, CFs are pretty helpful, imo.

Before Fargo, I was rated as high as a 9, but mostly I was considered a strong 7 to average 8. I never played more than a minimum of safeties and took too many chances, which hurt my overall rating.

I was still kind of playing somewhat competitively when Fargo became a thing, and I was rated a 485. Guessing that would be about a weak-mid 7.
I’ve wanted to try a Meucci. Many of my friends have one of them.

I’ve accounted for deflection so much over the years it probably wouldn’t make me much better with CF even though I would like to see what masse would be with one.

Modern Mueccis can be a little hit and miss with quality control. I've mostly been lucky with them, but I know a couple people that haven't.

Pre-dot Meuccis tend to be pretty consistent, like my DH-1, which has the best feel of any stick I own, and my HP-3 is a blackdot, which I like a lot, but it definitely has less feel.

My newest Meucci is a ANW-3 which I ordered with the pro-shaft (LoDef) and a box shaft; I like the pro, but you have to have a pretty consistent stroke or it will screw you over. Very low deflection though.

Low-deflection shafts are great, but they do take some practice if you've never shot one before, and you use a lot of sidespin. You're going to aim a lot closer to center.

CF shafts are virtually no def, but they're kind of clicky (sound) and I'm not a fan of the feel, but I'm old school; younger players always want CFs/LD shafts.

You may want to look into tips; the tech has definitely changed quite a bit in 20 years.

There's too many now to list here. I'd suggest lePro, Tiger, Kamui, and Triangle medium-hard at first.

It'll give you a baseline to work off. Of the ones above, I've liked Triangle/LePro as a good budget tip. Kamui or Moori are better as softer tips; never liked them that much harder than medium.

I used to use a supersoft kamui, which is really grabby, but it can make table-length shots a bit of a surprise. So I'd go medium or so and once you get your stroke figured out, if you feel like the tip isn't grabby enough, try a medium-soft or straight soft or whatever.

My typical bar table tip was usually a Triangle/Tiger. Decent durability and consistency.

Here's a link to a good list of tips:

My first job at 14 was racking the balls at a snooker pool hall in Springfield. I was good but I was playing pool 40 hours a week getting better.

By 16, I was taking grown ass men’s money. When I got a car, I thought partying and chasing women was a better use of my time.
