Turkey Frying Question

OK, I've fried several turkeys in the past and they've always turned out fine. I've always used peanut oil (and most websites recommend peanut oil). However, I have an unopened container of regular Wesson cooking oil and I am out of peanut oil. Has anyone ever used regular vegetable oil for frying a turkey? If so, how did it turn out compared to peanuot oil or can you tell a difference? Peanut oil is pretty expensive so if I can save $25 and use the oil I already have, I will (as long as it won't be a disaster)

I think one the big reasons for the use of peanut oil is the very high smoke point. Other oils might put off a lot more smoke.

I have to believe there are better sites on the internet to get this info than a football BB.

ST. CLOUD, Minnesota (AP) -- Bill Fickett wanted to give his wife a break from the kitchen on Thanksgiving, so he offered to cook. His kind gesture ended up causing about $14,000 in damage.

"I don't know how it happened," Fickett said. "My wife just had a baby, so I said I'd take care of the turkey."

He decided to try his hand at deep-fat frying a turkey. He borrowed a fryer and got directions from a friend. He bought a thermometer to make sure the oil didn't get too hot.

Fickett said he was heating up about 3 gallons of oil before the fire started. He adjusted the temperature to the recommended 350 degrees, then stepped into the house to get the bird.

Next thing he knew, smoke was pouring out of the garage.

By the time firefighters got there Thursday afternoon, the garage was in flames, said Gene Kostreba, acting assistant fire chief. He said the fire was contained to the garage, which was destroyed. Fickett said it was insured.

No one was injured. The fire was still under investigation, Kostreba said.

Fickett and his family still had a nice Thanksgiving dinner.

"We just had to have chicken instead of turkey," he said. "I'll probably stick to baking them now."

Interesting. The reason people use peanut oil is two fold. One is the smoking point is high at 450. The other reason is peanut oil doesn't change of transfer taste into what is being fried. Vegetable oil also has a very high smoking point which varies according to what the ratio of the mixture is but does mildly change the flavor. Hope this helps.

It is true, and you should use Peanut oil only. The high flash/smoke point is key for frying the Turkey.

It's the tast dude extra virgin olive oil has a higher smoking point. Most vegetable oils are very high as well. Didn't I just say that? Peanut oil has doesn't change or transfer taste into what your frying. Sometimes I wonder why I even bother to post.
